What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? Michigan

You deleted your thread.

What you were told by the university registrar was only partially correct. You can have university records changed to a "preferred" name (nickname) as the registrar indicated - but to change your name legally on all university records, it is a bit more complicated, especially when you are receiving financial aid.

Following is what I suggest you do to have your university records changed to reflect your new legal name (and legal status).

You should first make an appointment with the Dean of Students. The Dean of Students Office can coordinate changes with the registrar and FAFSA and the SSA, etc., and - because your legal name change was done through the courts under seal - you can unseal the records for the purpose of official university records changes. Your new university records would have a "FERPA flag" placed on them, restricting access to your records the same way your name change records are currently restricted by the court.

Although this is not necessarily an easy process, my understanding is that it is actually not all that rare.

Good luck.
