Check with ForgiveStudentLoanDebt.org with your question, and you may get some helpful suggestions there as well.

This is a common tactic with on-line schools and for-profit schools.

Keep track of who you talk to, and do not give up.
She never said she planned to default on her student loans. She never even said she HAD a student loan.

And just to put this out there - people who refuse to pay for their degrees or who try to weasel their way out of debt are people I would NEVER hire, never want to work with, and who I would be openly hostile to. I have four degrees, all of which I have sacrificed for, both in time and money, and I have lived a very frugal lifestyle in order to support my love of education.

When entitled jerks who don't want to pay for their crappy degree that they chose and then can't get a job with run out on their loans, it makes the prices higher for those of us with ethics and morals who work to pay back our loans and fees. I have paid over $165,000 for the degrees I have. And I don't owe one cent today, because when I take money, I promise to pay it back, and I keep my word.

Is education expensive? YES, and it should be. People who have worked for 20 years to gain a level of expertise to teach students deserve to be paid for their time and effort. There are ways to get degrees that don't rack up tons of debt. But if you made the choice to take a loan and then you want out, I believe that loan should HAUNT you forever.

Not only that, but they already refunded her for the course so there would not be any debt associated with it.

Disregarding the fact that your post has nothing to do with the topic at hand...

St Leo is a legitimate institution and they are non-profit.

What's a Girl to Do

@Humusluvr
Thank you for the suggestion about politely demanding that I have another advisor because the one that I have does not even communicate with me. I have sent her several emails and left her several voice mails and she does not return either. That is part of the reason that I feel so helpless in the situation because I don’t have any help from the school and when I call around the college for other support, the person will take the first step and then tell me to follow up with my advisor. After I am done replying to everyone here, I plan on calling to see if I can get another advisor or some other assistance. The fact that they cannot find another school with a similar program should tell them that this class is really irrelevant in my opinion anyway. Thank you for your encouragement because I did feel like giving up for like 20 minutes yesterday. Also, you are right. I never did say anything about wanting to default on my loans because I have no intentions of doing so. All I want to do is get this last class out of the way, graduate, and move on to my next degree. I am dedicated to being a life learner. Even after I obtain my doctorate, I plan to continue to take classes of interest for my own personal knowledge.
@csi7
Thank you for your suggestion; however, this is a not-for-profit school as Zinger said. This is one of the reasons why I chose the school because I thought they would care more about the student and their needs than they would about turning a profit. I will check them out though to see if they have any suggestions on how to proceed from here. I will exhaust all of my options until I get results. Thank for the motivation. I really need it at this point.
@ecmst12

Yes they did already refund me for the course so I am aware that there would not be any debt associated with it. It is justice and change that I seek despite what you believe about law suits. Never once have you read me mention money unless someone asked me about the refund or when I mentioned how much money that I have spent with the school. I don’t want money, I didn’t even want the refund they gave me or to be dropped from the class in the first place. That was part of the problem and I want results! No one should have to go through a situation like this when they have put this much time and yes money into their degree. I just want an alternative class or a change in the software and other tools that is used in the class that would be worth the over $1400.00 that I don’t have a problem paying. I don’t want myself or anyone else to have to go through this, so it is justice that I seek. At this point “To Sue or Not to Sue” is merely a title, not the question or the point. I will try to change it. Thank you for your feedback.

@Zinger, you are correct, it is a legitimate, non-profit school and as aforementioned, this is one of the reasons why I chose the school because I thought they would care more about the student and their needs than they would about turning a profit. I have been at Saint Leo since 2009 and prior to this situation and getting the new advisor, I had no complaints and I loved the school. I still do, but I don’t appreciate how I am being treated right now. I am not here to bash the school, get money from them, or any of that. I just wanted some advice because after contacting the BBB and the attorney general with no results, I wanted to know what my other options are after that. There still may be some sort of resolution with the AG or BBB and maybe it was all delayed because of the holidays; I don’t know, but this would not be the first time they did not reply to the BBB. I am just planning ahead and gathering information now so that I will have a course of action to take in case they do not respond to any of them. Thank all of you guys for taking the time to give me your comments and suggestions. I truly appreciate it and I certainly needed the encouragement!

You can't force them to change no matter how just you feel your cause is. They made you whole by refunding your money. That's pretty much all you could ask for in a lawsuit. Anything else you want, all you can do is ask for, you can't force them through the legal system.

I understand that I can't make them, but that doesn't mean I shouldn't try. I am just incredulous at the fact that they know there are problems with the course and that no other Liberal Studies program even mandates this course or anything like it and they still refuse to do anything about it. No where does that type of thinking and behavior fit into their core values that they so strictly enforce on their students.

Core Values

All of us, individually and collectively, work hard to ensure that our students develop the character, learn the skills and assimilate the knowledge essential to become morally responsible leaders. The success of our University depends upon a conscientious commitment to our mission, vision and goals.

Our community's strength depends on the unity and diversity of our people, on the free exchange of ideas and on learning, living and working harmoniously.

Personal Development-Saint Leo University stresses the development of every person's mind, spirit and body for a balanced life. All members of the Saint Leo University community must demonstrate their commitment to personal development in order to strengthen the character of our community.

Responsible Stewardship-Our Creator blesses us with an abundance of resources. We foster a spirit of service to employ our resources to university and community development. We must be resourceful. Really?

I can't believe I just received a reply to this ancient post. Well, to update everyone, I re-took the class, aced it, and I have graduated with my undergrad and I am now working on my MBA at the same school. There was an auditor in the class for most of the semester. Thanks to me, changes have been made to the class, so to all of you who continue to post negative comments, enduring them was well worth it because now students that will come after me won't have to go through what I went through. Thanks again to everyone who replied and supported me throughout this process. :p

I don't think anyone told you not to ASK for what you wanted, only that a lawsuit would not get you what you wanted if they refused. I'm glad everything worked out well!
