Ok, I was reading a thread where allmost every single reply candidly stated you cannot go file character def for spreading rumors of being gay.

My question is why was Tom Cruise able to sue every website, and magazine that called him gay?

Tom Cruise (like you and me and everyone else on the planet) can sue anyone for anything at any time for any reason.

He is doing it for publicity purposes.

Reading a LOT of these posts, most of your responses have not been to help but to insult. And furthermore usually saying they have to "deal" with it, with out actually knowing the law.

This site kind of disgusts me. Not the people who ask for help, but the people who reply.

Someone can say they think you are gay- that's their personal opinion. In Tom Cruise's case they wrote he was gay & therefore put in print something that was not true. (Or so he was able to prove in court). An average person will have a hard time proving they came to any damage by someone spreading a rumor- or even proving who spread the rumor & to whom. Tom Cruise likely proved that lies about his character/behavior could/would hurt his career/life/income.

If people on this site had the kind of money Tom Cruise has- I'm sure they'd be successful in some court cases. But the 'average Joe' doesn't have millions of dollars to burn in order to address rumors.

I was thinking the same thing. Probably does a non-driving job and doesn't have to be handling any money.
