No, I did not say that she should proceed with her education before getting a job. I said that if she wanted to take on the burden of higher student loans, in order to finish more quickly, that it was a perfectly acceptable option....and her choice.

This is what his attorney says:

Since I assume that his attorney knows more about his case than we do, I am structuring my responses based on what his attorney is telling him.
his attorney works for HIM.

I wonder which would be easier on the attorney, agreeing to a few years right off the bat, or actually fighting for his client.

I most certainly would not, did not, will not, agree with everything my attorney says, just because it comes out of his/her mouth.

I have a feeling that the STBX would most like finish A degree quicker if SHE were paying for it, instead of our OP.

Personally, I feel offended that there are women out there who feel entitled to be 'supported' because they have a uterus. This woman NEEDS to find a means to support herself and get finish her schooling, if that is what she so wishes. I mighhave felt some compassion towards her, but not after 6 years of going to school - and can't decide my major.

Sorry, but I too did the schooling while working full-time and a house full of kids at the time.

What the OP needs to look at is the outlay of $$. If it would be cheaper to give the STBX a small alimony for, say, a year, than to fight it in court, with attorney fees, etc, then the OP has to decide if that is something he can live with. It really boils down to your tolerance level of manipulation by the X.

Thank you to everyone for providing perspective and advice.

I'm going to push my attorney to start from no alimony and work from there as opposed to starting from $$ and going up.
