What is the name of your state? California

I have been storing my 24ft self contained Travel Trailer (not a 5th wheel) in a storage facility for nearly 2 years. within the last 8 months the facility came under new management. I am needing to know what laws would allow this storage to Force me to place Insurance on this trailer as a condition to keep it stored there from which I was never required to do before? I mean who wants to pay insurance on a trailer that is being stored and not used on public roadways. is this legal for them to do? Please advise:eek:

Is the trailer currently registered?

Yes the trailer registration is current. I just received the tags a few weeks ago and have not yet put them on. I told the management this but they insist I provide proof of insurance or remove the trailer from the facility. A gated facility which I pay for the specific space my trailer is kept and it does not move.

My response:

First of all, to what "extent" do they want insurance; i.e., State minimums?

Second, at some point, you will be moving the trailer. They have no idea when, or how many times. During the time that the trailer is on their premises, and until you exit the facility, theoretically you could do damages; e.g., take out a fence, run into a brick wall, etc. The facility wants to know that you're covered for any damages you may cause with your trailer to their facilities.

My Question is Can they force me to place vehicle isurance on this trailer which is being stored there becuase it is not being used. It does not move under its own power it must be attached to a hitch on another vehicle. If my car insurance covers my boat when I am towing it, why wouldnt it cover my trailer as well.? this is not a mobile home mind you but a TRAILER. I Thank You in advance for your assistance and advice.

My response:

Gee, I don't know. Talk to your insurance representative.

Apparently, you didn't understand my response. I KNOW it's a trailer.

I understood your response, and it did not answer my question, no need to be rude. A simple yes or no would have been sufficeint, but since you do not know, why are you posting a response. as if you did know.

My response:

Pal, I want you to read this real slowly so you'll understand. Okay?

Your original question was, "to Force me to place Insurance on this trailer as a condition to keep it stored there?"

You NEVER wrote out your storage contract for us to read. How would we know? Therefore, we had to extrapolate that they DO have the right to have your trailer insured. At some point, you'll be moving the trailer in and out of their facilities, correct? You COULD do damages during the time it's being moved in or out.

Might be a silly question, but where is the boat stored when not in use? On the 24 foot trailer???

If you don't like the rules of the storage facility, find a different one who will play by YOUR RULES.

In the state of California, "liability" insurance (15/30) is not required on a travel trailer as you describe. It is covered by the insurance of the car towing it. In fact, I don't think you can even get insurance for the trailer along (could be wrong there).
When they ask for insurance, are you sure they aren't asking for insurance to cover you if the trailer is damaged/destroyed? ie: similar to comprehensive

My response:

Zigner, our writer doesn't know the law for his State. For all we know, vehicle insurance may not cover a trailer when hitched to a car; i.e., it may be an added, required, coverage expense. He may be compelled to have insurance on the trailer, either by law, or by contract, or both. But, we do not know, which is why I advised our writer to talk to his insurance company, and to review his storage contract.

Additionally, I really rather doubt the storage facility cares about damage to the trailer. They probably only care about the damage his trailer can do WHEN he moves it in and out of their facility.

The boat is stored in My Driveway and was used frequently until recent events. took place and gas prices on the rise... And Thank you for your kind suggestion, unfortunately my job has been outsourced to India and I cannot afford to store it anyplace else much less provide insurance on it.

Have a nice day.

So, you DON'T use the boat due to gas prices and you store the boat in your driveway, and store the trailer at a storage facility???

If your NOT USING either one of them....why aren't they stored together???
