Anyone know of credible websites to do law research?

I have looked and looked and can't find anything that is helpful and/or credible. I would appreciate any help you have!

Welcome back rmet! Read that you went on vacation! ( I read that last long post but it's taken me all day between kids and lunch and a yardsale! ;) )
- so no, I didn't respond to it - it was wild though - lots of love!

Oh - and how do you know who is a good guardian?

Have you looked for links on this site?
Also, what about Universities in your state? You might want to check those with law schools.
Here in Ohio, you can check out:
- Case Western Reserve University School of Law.
- University of Akron School of Law (a professor there, John Green, is always called upon nationally)
- Ohio State School of Law.

There are tons...like I said, start with your state. Also, the county courthouses (should) have law libraries.

The first best way to find things is to google subjects.. then SIFT through all the information given

Another good site for state codes, and statutes is

www.findlaw.com

and as LDIJ state the state government site.

(and btw, it is still a matter of sifting through to find what you want and need)

The SIFTING part is what I was afraid you were going to say .....
.......... (There is no 'crying' smiley face on here !)

But, Thank you - and if anyone else has any suggestions, please list them - I would GREATLY appreciate it!

Let's just say that I knew that already but I'm currently taking a course in legal research and it really is about sifting through because what might seem like something that would work against you COULD have something in it that is the PRIZE of all prizes for you.

Thank you for everything!
Are you by any chance in school?...or have a friend or relative that is in college? Many universities libraries have Lexis-Nexis available for their students...often online (mine does)...and quite frankly, its definitely the cream of the crop for the purposes of legal research.

I agree, that is what I use here at home. OP... if you don't have that option, go to your local courthouse (even small ones) and speak to them about if they have a public law library. Mine does but it's small, however the best part is that they have a computer in there with access there. LEXIS take a little getting used to in order to get JUST what you want so you aren't going through so much more then you need but once you get the hang of it, it's great. You can get all the cases, codes, etc.. through there

When searching case law....I have found that if you use the keywords right...it narrows things down beautifully.

Example: If I want to search for grandparent visitation for a state. I do the first search with grandparent as the primary keyword, and visitation as the secondary keyword...and then once I get the hits....I further narrow the search by using the phrase "grandparent visitation". I generally end up with exactly what I want.....better than any other research tools I have ever used.

Its really great for tax law too! So much more workable than CCH or RIA.

It's funny you mention CCH. I JUST read about that.

I've been using LEXIS since I started school in October and all I can say is practice makes perfect. I love having it at home because I've taken several chances to just look up cases that I see on television to give me practice.

IAAL had me on there last night looking over Marvin v. Marvin and subsequent cases. I find it rather surprising and amusing sometimes.

You wouldn't believe how many hours I sometimes spending researching the oddest issues....LOL ...I see something in one case that sends me off on the wierdest tangents!

I almost "bit" last night myself on "Marvin vs Marvin"....but I knew that if I did it I would be on it all night.....and after all....I am supposed to stay off California threads... :D

LOL yeah I heard that about you..LOL (and just to note, I was right about the palimony thing, but it didn't stop there)

I do the same thing.. and since I've really just learned to Shepardize a lot better and understand it more I was having even more fun. I found some pretty interesting things.

This one here is from our state Creager v. State, 737 N.E.2d 771. It is one of the first I ever searched on LEXIS while playing. It shows plainly at the straws people grasp in order to appeal (I actually went to grade school with this guy). There is a CS issue on there but most of it is about the crime itself.
