As the title relays, I'm confused as to how I might proceed in this horrible situation . Long story short I, (single professional female, 30s) leased a townhouse in an upscale rental complex around 5 years ago.1.0-1.5 years into living there, I ended up on the receiving end of harassment from another ( female) tenant. Please keep in mind that this was a zero catalyst event. The individual lived on the other side of the large complex, and I had no prior interaction with her before the harassment began. She began by leaving harassing/threatening notes on my door and vehicle, reporting me to the leasing office for any and every fabricated offense she could think of (literally, off of the top of my head she claimed I had multiple dogs, cats, birds, that I was throwing wild parties, had trash everywhere, had children running wild, had 'boyfriends' causing problems, etc. )Not an iota of truth to any of it. I'm a quiet, conservative type of person, I don't have kids, was gone 10 hrs nearly every day, had no pets at the time and certainly didn't have men around because I was in a long distance relationship and traveled to a different city to visit him nearly every weekend. Essentially, there was no way it would have even been possible for me to do even 1/4 of what she claimed I was doing . None of my actual neighbors EVER had any complaints.

Eventually I filed for a restraining order against her, which was unfortunately not granted ,I believe due having a subpar attorney and the fact the woman repeatedly said she was moving out of the complex and the judge didn't feel it was necessary. She left, not right away, but within , I would say 5 or 6 months. I remained a tenant until a few months ago.

Fast forward a couple of years : I was put under "criminal investigation" because this woman, who is now dating a city police officer claimed I had harassed , followed, and stalked her. Again, no truth to it, and actually SHE and this LEO boyfriend started coming to my rental complex to ask about me and to involve a 'friend' of theirs, who just so happens to be a maintenance man(who is an ex-con) whose sexual advances I rejected, who then began retaliating against me and stalking me. I ultimately left due to the harassment, and this maintenance persons involvement. I have not been arrested or charged with any crime. (Yet, and hopefully will never be).

I have an attorney to defend me against any criminal allegations-- I would like to know if it is likely that I would prevail in a civil suit against any of these people-- either the cop/his department for opening a bogus investigation against me or the apartment complex for allowing these individuals back onto property, basically, to harass me and getting the criminal maintenance person to lie and corroborate their claims. I would like what I spent on attorneys fees back, if nothing else, and to prevent all of these people from ever contacting me again. This has been an incredibly stressful time for me, as you might imagine. I've never even gotten a speeding ticket, etc .
Thank you for any advice you may give me.

Short answer, no. But I have to ask. Why didn't you ask your lawyer who knows all of the details of the situation this question?

Well, I did; my current attorney only does criminal defense, however, and would not handle a civil case. The owner(s) of my former rental have a reputation for being very nasty and litigious towards tenants and it was assumed a civil suit against them would be an uphill battle, to say the least. I was just hoping to get opinions based off others' experiences and go from there. Thanks

There is absolutely no reason whatsoever that you can think of that this woman would want to harass you?

Ok, what did he say? Even an attorney that handles criminal only and knows about the case in detail will be able to give you an idea of any civil case you might have..

It would be an uphill battle. The landlords aren't your or the other tenants' parents or babysitters.

I don't think you are going to find anyone on this forum who has had experiences similar to yours, I'm afraid.

If the woman and her boyfriend continue to harass you, report them both to the police.

Right now I do not see that you have a civil action to pursue against anyone.

The OP could also file a complaint with the cop boyfriend's agency. You should be able to find out how online on his state or county PD web site, depending on who he works for.

I'm aware of that, however, there are also rights that come along with being a lease holding tenant, correct? These individuals returned to the property YEARS after they were no longer tenants to try to get information about me from this maintenance employee, specifically because they knew he had a romantic interest in me and had been rejected. I was NOT the only tenant he harassed, nor was I the only tenant these other people harassed.
As far as "motive", they just seem like 'chip on the shoulder' type of people who hate seeing anyone doing better than them. I think they saw someone confident, happy, .had a good life and thought I'd be an easy target to 'bully', as absurd as it sounds. They did something similar to another woman that lived
by me, but she left before it escalated to the point my situation did.

Even if true, your story is really hard to believe.

Keep reporting the harassment to the police. Eventually all who are conspiring against you will find someone else to annoy.

[/QUOTE]

I never claimed tons of people were 'conspiring against me'. The woman who started all of this befriended the maintenance worker while she lived there. I had no problems with him until he started making advances towards me and didn't want to take no for an answer. The woman's harassment was documented, and obviously the leasing complex realized they were bogus accusations since I was repeatedly asked to renew my lease years after they left. Other tenants had complained about her when she lived there. I had zero contact with the woman other than via the restraining order hearing while she lived there, and I had none after she moved . I fail to see how an owner of a property isn't responsible for allowing people that don't live there to show up and demand information about tenants and say they should be evicted, because they were allowed to do so by an employee with a lengthy record for harassment towards female tenants and domestic partners.

Edited to add:
To be clear, these people twisted situations that have nothing to do with them to try to 'prove' they were harassed by me , using information they should have never had access to.For instance, they're claiming because I sent copies of the maintenance guys lewd text messages to the office asking them to tell him to leave me alone, and photos of some random person blocking my vehicle into my garage for hours at a time asking that they find out who it was or tow the vehicle, that this must mean that I 'harass' people, and thus them. Surely this would be actionable?

(Edit)
My criminal defense attorney is also working on that. Thanks for your advice .
