Because there is a limited amount of money out there and if you apply for it via fraud (splitting up from your husband in name only) that means that someone who meets the needs honestly may not get that money. Contrary to popular opinion you don't have any right to a college education and, honestly, you don't need one to get ahead. There are a lot of college graduates working at the mall because a degree is no promise of success in the future. I went to law school with a guy who could never pass the Bar and now works full time delivering Pizza's. See how much education has helped him out!
There are a lot of better ways to reach your goal (helping your family) then defrauding the government. Look at taking classes at a community college where the tuition is usually quite reasonable and the credits are transferable to another school down the line. Get an entry level job with a company that pays for employees to take college courses after they've worked a certain amount of time. Or just get a job and save up that money until you have enough for school. The fact that you don't understand why what you are suggesting is WRONG is very sad. It smacks of entitlement. Why should my tax money go to send you to school. And "because other people get help for college" isn't an acceptable answer. "Because other people get to" stops being an excuse when you are 8 years old.
