I started my first semester of college this fall. I was told when applying for admission that I could not get any financial aid or loans until the admissions process was complete. I was told that it was complete and my acct reflected that. I was able to get my student loans and financial aid for the semester. I only have finals on Monday left for this semester and am getting straight A's in my classes so far. When I tried to register for classes for the spring on Wednesday, the college website said that I had a hold on my acct. I called the school to find out what was wrong and they said that they made a mistake in admitting me and that I cannot take classes next semester. They never sent me anything in writing saying there was a problem. They might even withdraw me from my current classes even though I'm almost done. They said that they can't accept my high school diploma. I have a California high school proficiency from 1995. It is a California legal equivalent high school diploma stating that I graduated in the top half of my class. What are my options? Can they withdraw me from my classes even though they already accepted me and the mistake was theirs not mine? Is that legal since I did get financial aid and federal loans based on their acceptance at the beginning of the semester and they did accept me already? I checked on their policy's and it states that they can make an exception for admission if they wish too, so allowing me to continue would not violate their policy. Do they have a case for withdrawing their acceptance?

It is an equivalent WITHIN the state of California. There is nothing that compels other states (or entities in other states) to accept it as such.

I understand that the equivalent is in California. I want to know if the school can accept my admission, give me financial aid and federal students loans, have me do the entire course and then decide that they made a mistake and do not want to accept me. They had all the information and accepted me in August and their own policy states that they can make an exception.
About the other post, I'm sorry if I sounded rude. I saw that other posts had been answered already and was just wondering about mine. It didn't seem that education post's were very common.

No one knows until after they have viewed the post whether they will have an answer or not. Not everyone knows the answer to each and every post they read. The fact that other questions were answered does not mean that your post has been viewed by someone who is aware of the appropriate law for your specific circumstances in your specific state.

I understand that. I understand anyone can answer. My question was to anyone that might want to give advice, good or bad.

Does anyone think I have any standing due to the fact that the college granted me federal financial aid and student loans? Wouldn't it be fraud on their part if they withdrew me for the diploma after accepting it and giving me aid? They already received federal funds for this semester. I only have one more final to do and will pass the class even if they do not allow me to take it. Won't they have to give me the credits for this semester? By the way it is a Community College if I didn't state that earlier.

This is not legally backed or justifiable advice but here is what I would do.

Suggest to them that if they keep the money paid by you and the federal government that they would have an obligation to provide you with the classes and subsequent credits (if passed the courses) that money paid for.

If they will not record credits for you, then they cannot take the money for the classes. After all, that was the deal you made with them.

ask for a complete refund of all monies you have paid and contact any agency that loaned you money or granted money on your behalf that the school has taken their money under false pretenses.

Now I don't know what you would do with one semesters credits but I would expect either that or my money back.

Thanks! I can at least transfer to another college and not have to take a semester of classes over again if they give me the credits. I don't think they want any bad publicity. I mailed a certified letter to the Dean of students today and CC: to the President of the college also. Hopefully they will make the right decision.
