I attend a private K-12th school in Texas. I'm graduating in about a month, and have been attending the school for a good 7 years. The school is Christian. Recently, I came out as an open homosexual. Understandably, this rather irked the school's Board of Directors. I am not violating any school policies, however. I've read those pretty closely.

My issue is this. Recently, the board has said that if I do not go to weekly therapy sections with a local church's pastor, they will expell me. If they do indeed have the right to expell me, then I'll just leave the school: I've got enough credits to get a High School Diploma as is.

I'm an emotional lad, however, and don't want to leave the school if I don't have to. The school claims to be principled. I suppose it's ironic that my own stubborn principles are what keep me from attending these four meetings.

I'm tired of the school telling me how wrong I am.

So I'm just curious as to what the rights of a private school are in this sort of situation. Is this sort of discrimination okay in the private sector?

Thanks for your help,
-Clayton.

Private schools are allowed to require that. They are allowed to require Christian education. This counseling could be seen as an offshoot of Christian education if your school's beliefs are as such.

Me too.

But, for this post, hey, if (for example) you go to the Hollywood Church of Global Warming School for Musheads, then you have to believe their doctrines.

If ya doesn't, ya gets throwed out!

You may have an opening. . . .

http://www.lifesite.net/ldn/2006/jun/06063008.html

"SAN FRANCISCO, California, June 30, 2006 (LifeSiteNews.com) – A Christian high school that expelled two students for allegedly engaging in a lesbian relationship can be sued over the decision, the California Supreme Court ruled today."

He was not expelled for being homosexual. He was told to attend counseling. If he is expelled it would be over not attending counseling. And being allowed to sue or to be sued is NOT the same as winning.

Besides, California is a long way from Texas. (In more ways than one.) Our Constitution specifically allows the right to privacy for example. You don't have to look around in the penumbra.

Why not just go to the counseling session armed with a few dozen articles about priests molesting young boys? (Then tell them you need help with your mental problem - your fear of hypocrisy). Maybe hit on the counselor a bit.

If you're going to have to go, you might as well enjoy your time there :D

Oh man. xD

That would be priceless. I could come to the session wearing a mesh shirt or my very best ultra-flamer wear.

In response to the California Supreme Court decision... Yeah. That doesn't really transfer over. Oh, and just for the record, the principle said if he found out I was "engaging in homosexual sin" then I'd be expelled. I don't think I'm going to brag about how sweet my boyfriend is to him any time soon.

I sit on the board of trustees for an all boy private high school, and we have voted to expell numerous students for being gay. We have been sued numerous times, and each time the case was thrown out at summary judgment. Private schools have a legal right to expell students as they wish. As for the California Case, well one its California, two as ohiogirl said because you can be sued does not mean you can win. Not to mention this OP goes to school in the Great State of Texas.

The decision is on the basis that it interupts the learning eviroment and makes a majority of students to feel very uncomfortable.

Just out of curiosity but do you also expel different ethnicities (such as after 9/11 did you expell anyone that was Muslim or could appear to be Muslim)? Anything can disrupt the learning environment. ANYTHING.
