laws about Cleared Checks

This happened the 3rd time in 3 years. The local hospital "lost" my payment. The check got cashed but never applied to my account.

The bank charges me $25.00 to get a copy of a cleared check. I already spent $50.00 the past few years obtaining copies. NOW I have to spend another $25.00. The hospital tells me they won't credit me for the cost to obtain check copies. But it isn't my mistake the payment was promptly sent. Are there any laws where I can at least receive a credit from my account to pay for the copies of the checks? I don't understand why I need to pay for hospital bookkeeping mistakes.

Did you include the account # in the memo of the check? Did you include the stub from the invoice when you mailed the check? Why don't you get a copy of the check online for FREE instead of having the bank research it for you?

bank

"Did you include the account # in the memo of the check?" Yes..

"Did you include the stub from the invoice when you mailed the check?" Yes

"Why don't you get a copy of the check online for FREE instead of having the bank research it for you?" haha.. My bank doesn't offer that service. In order to get a copy of a check I have to pay a research free and pay for a copy of the check. At my bank transactions are still processed by hand. They're still in the 80's.

Rip off

If you use your debit card as a debit card, and enter your PIN instead of signing, there is usually a fee. If you use our debit card as a credit card and SIGN for the transaction, there is no fee.

WOW..... I am amazed..... I have never heard of any bank charging customers to use their debit card. I have never paid to use my debit as a debit or as a credit card. And I would never pay a bank to spend my money. I don't pay any fees whatsoever on my bank accounts.

Why is it a rip-off? It is clearly listed in the fee schedule that your bank provides to you. If you don't want to pay the fee then don't hit "DEBIT" on the little machine. Don't sho at Aldi's either, since they don't allow credit transactions. There are a few other places that are similar.

As far as what has already happened, you didn't say what state you're in but I'm not aware of any laws about crediting copy/research fees. However, there's no law against going to the director of the hospital business office/patient accounts & complaining (in person, not via phone). Three times is excessive & no, there's no reason for your having to repeatedly foot the bill for their errors. I'd ask (sternly) for a refund. Even half is better than nothing. Regarding the debit/credit debate, you can sift through that or else if your hospital's local, why not go physically hand them a check & get a receipt? It couldn't take longer than all the phone calls you're already making, could it? Plus the aggravation. Anyway if they can screw up a check they can manage to screw up a credit or debit transaction, somehow.
