My mother received a rude and disgusting note with flowers from a national flower delivery corporation. It was her 86th birthday and she lives alone. She received a note that was mocking, refered to race and ended with the N-word. This is an inordinately sweet and nice lady who must have been even more confused than shocked and filled with negative emotions on her birthday and all alone with no one to explain or mitigate the impact. What is the remedy FROM the corporation TO the abused recipient? She was not their customer and ordered NOTHING from this corporation. She was an innocent who was compelled to take delivery of an extremely disturbing note. Does this make the national media? Does it make the state regulatory agency? How about the Congressman? Does it go to the local TV station consumer reporter? Is it remedied and kept quiet? To what degree$$

have you contact the flower company? Who sent the flowers? The company most likely has no idea of the content of the card, most of the time the sender merely fills out the card and it is attached to the arrangement. I seriously doubt anyone takes the time to read the cards, and many times they are inside of a sealed envelope anyway.

By the way, your mother could have refused the flowers.

It is a sad thing, I agree, that someone would be so hateful, but it is not illegal.

Corp Response Pending

The Corp. described the event as "horrible." Been there done that. I am simply floating this situation to get an idea of what the ultimate response by the corporation should be. Apparently, you think they should just laugh at my mom; just blow us off. And that's OK too if you really believe that. My mother has the memory and cognitive limitations of an 86 year old. I tried to describe the situation in the first post. If you think there was no insult and that my mother was not unecessarily confused and offended upon the delivery of birthday flowers with a "horrible" note, we disagree. A judge took his pants cleaners to court last week for millions of dollars and you think my mom and I are supposed to be insulted and derided by a national flower corporation? Wow, I guess etiquette and decorum are just out the window. There are a few points in the original post that might be responded to. P.S. Her other son sent the flowers. I am positive that he did not send the "horrible" note.

First of all, no one said that.

What I do think, is that what happened is not illegal, and that you will find it impossible to find a court where the flower shop will be held responsible.

As for the dry cleaner/judge, you might want to check on the outcome of that suit. (and yes, the word suit was pun intended)

You have not won the lawsuit lotto, but thanks for playing.

And really, your mother is the only one that I feel anything at all for. You seem to know the words etiquette and decorum, perhaps you might actually try using some.

I didn't ask if this offense was legal or illegal. I asked what the response of the flower corp. should be; if they want this event publicized. P.S. What is a "hate" crime and should this be turned over to the county sheriff? Thanks for bringing that to my attention in your first post. I hadn't thought of that.

What do *I* think the corporation should do? I think they should say (to your mother) that it's horrible that someone would send a note like that.
Oh, wait, that's what the corp. did already

What you DID ask was: "What is the remedy FROM the corporation TO the abused recipient?" This would seem to indicate that you feel the corp. did something illegal, but you wanted to make sure.
Listen - your mother has been around a long time, long enough to know that there are mean people in the world. Yes, it's hurtful. However, unless you can prove the flower company is the entity that actually wrote the note and sealed it in the envelope, then you have NO chance of anything more than sympathetic feelings from the corp.

Please feel free to post to the media about how the flower company did this horrible thing to you...but, before you do, please make sure to set aside several thousand dollars for your legal defense when they sue you.

While I believe that whoever wrote that card was an ass...I doubt that this falls under a Hate Crime. But you can alway inquire at Mom's local PD.
If it was my flower shop, I would fire the person who wrote the note and send your Mom a glorious bouquet of flowers once a month for 2 years...With extra glory on Mothers Day, Thanksgiving, Easter and Christmas...But thats me, I am exceptional at Customer Service...;)

Bay - it could be that it wasn't even an employee who wrote the card...
In fact, it probably WASN'T an employee. Someone wouldn't have phoned this in as then they would have credit card info on file for it.

She said her brother ordered the flowers...My impression was that an employee must have done it...But I guess if the flowers were left on the counter in the store waiting for the delivery guy, then anyone could have switched notes...But still...I would still do something nice...just for good business...
