What is the name of your state? Illinois

I've been employed at a large hotel in Chicago for four years and never had a problem working there. Yesterday, the director called me into her office and told me that multiple people came in two groups to complain about me. I work with only 4 other people in my department, just one of whom has been picking fights with me on a regular basis as of late. Anyway, she told me the were saying that I only care about money and accused me of several actions which I did not do, the only truth they told was that I complain about my schedule. She also went on to tell me she believes what they say because I supposedly glared at her one day! Then she told me she will take disciplinary action against me if she hears anything else about me, and I know for a fact this one coworker is the ringleader of them if in fact there were more than just one. As a result, it has created a hostile work environment for me , getting shunned by my coworkers, and I feel that this a conspiracy to get me fired. Now I have to contend with this alleged "attitude problem".
The thing is, I have an excellent track record with this hotel, I have stacks of letters from former guests commenting on my professionalism.
I'm really scared and feel like I am walking on eggshells because of this, and that I might suddenly lose my job and not be able to support my family.
Oddly enough, what my coworkers accuse me of doing is something they do themselves. Can I do anything about this at all, or do I have to just bite the bullet and deal with it until I get fired over hearsay?

You need to deal with it, change your attitude about your schedule, and start looking for another job. Nothing of what you have described is harrassment or hostile. You can be fired over hearsay.

Well, yesterday a female guest asked me a question and my coworker told her it's too bad I'm a homosexual (I'm not) and not to let her kids anywhere near me because I'm supposedly this pervert and all. This has ruined me. I can't take this anymore and I'm on the brink of a breakdown.

You need to go to your manager about that.

My wife and daughter don't think so, and neither does anyone else, but my coworkers say that just to start in on me.

I don't know, but...

It seems to me that co-workers repeatedly commenting or speculating about your sexual orientation, whether they are wrong about it or not, and making comments that seem to accuse you of being a child molester, arguably constitute sexual harassment. If you were to file a complaint, not with your manager who apparently approves of this behavior, but with, say, the HR department or the EEOC, and the hotel fired you due to filing the complaint, that could arguably be an illegal retaliatory firing.

I am personally offended at the ignorance of someone saying "he's gay, keep your kids away from him," because, what? It's contagious? He'll molest them? And I find it hard to believe that a large hotel (is it part of a chain?) in a major city would not have a policy against its customer service professionals making comments about each others' sex lives to hotel guests.

Document the occurances. Complain to HR in a letter sent by certified mail or fax or some other way that you can prove when they got it. Prepare for the worst and hope for the best.
