What is the name of your state? MO

I am starting over and trying to put all of the information into one post. I will try to make it as short as possible.

I live in MO, but this happened in Chicago, IL

I was sent to a clinic in Chicago, IL for migraine treatments. They admitted me into the hospital for DHE IV treatments. ( My doctor is springfield had told me this was the treatments he expected me to have). I did not finish the treatments in the hospital because they took me off the treatments.

In about 60 hours I was given 68 shots and pills. I was knocked out from the first shot they gave me and only remember bits and pieces of the next 3 days. I do remember waking up and being very sick ( not sick to my stomach...just knew something was wrong) and would tell the nurses I needed help. I was red, swollen, whelped, and knew I was overly sedated.

Before I went into the hospital I filled out paperwork and talked to the dr about these things. I have an extreme fear of new medication. The admitting dr gave me one medication that I requested NOT to take. One medication I had been hospitalized the year before for 5 days for taking. Besides both of these problems...when I received my itimized bill of the medications. ( that's when I found out what I had been given) ...I looked up on the internet drug interactions. One drug had serious side effects if given with some of the others and several of the drugs had moderate risk if given together.

This hospitalization was in July. The beginning of September me and my mother in law went to the post office and when I got into the car out of NOWHERE I had SEVERE cramps in my chest and down the inside of my right arm. She called the Ambulance ( I just turned 43 and had never taken a ambulance ride in my life). That is how severe my pain was. I was given nitro(sp) & baby asperin on the way. The ER ran some test and sent me home. They said they could not find anything wrong to see my family dr. Well, with my migraine problems, etc. I put off making the appointment. Well, a couple of weeks later here came the pains again out of nowhere. My husband took me this time....( too fast of a ride..but, beside the point). More test, they sent me home still not finding anything. A couple of weeks ago it hit again out of the blue at my mothers house ..it scared her so bad...I took the ambulance again. This time the hospital kept me overnight and ran lots of test on my heart, etc. They can't find anything. It is so strange...these are like leg cramps only in my chest and down my arms and 1000 times worse when they hit. I have an appointment this Friday with my doctor so we can try to figure out what is going on. I NEVER had this problem before my stay at the Chicago Hospital. Although, I sill don't know what it is ..it is horribly freigtening because it just hits out of the blue. Oh, I have been put on Muscle relaxents & anti-inflamation medications to help try and control this until I get to my family doctor.

Now back to my hospital stay in Chicago. The oncall dr took me off alot of the medication because I was so sedated. On the third day I was half way awake...I can remember bits and peices...but, I left AMA because I was terrified they were going to kill me. I told the doctor I was terrified they were going to accidently overdose me and I had to leave. He just exploded and acted like it was MY FAULT. He told me I had not taken advantage of the program, well how could I ?...All they were doing was drugging me up. I didn't even take a bath for 3 days. That is how bad I was.

After I received the itemized bill of medications I called the hospital and had a fit. I was so angry. I told them I was going to hire an attorney. Well, they had me to talk to someone and she convienced me to write a letter to the hospital and see if we could settle something. NOW I know what a mistake that was! I received a letter stating there was not any medical malpractice I received adacute ( sp) care. That was all there was too the letter.

So, I decided it was time to get my medical records. ( I wish I would have done this first). The admitting doctor has one paragraph that is a COMPLETE LIE. She states she told me of the risk of the medications and precedures and I agreed. I would have NEVER AGREED to take so many medications at one time. I even wrote a special note in my paperwork my fear of new medications. All, I knew I was going to be having is DHE-IV treatments with Phenergan. I had had Phenergan before so wasn't scared, but I was afraid of the DHE-IV , she told my husband and I it was a safe treatment that had been done for years and not to worry I was in good hands. ( the Phenergan was for the nausa , because DHE can cause that). She told me about Biofeedback well I knew that wasn't dangerous I had done it in the past. Of course, I never got Biofeedback because of me being so over-medicated. She told me I would be on a special diet to see if I had food triggers. That was it.....She never told me about risk of the medications and precedure. Oh, and she did ask if I had allergies too dyes because the MRI they sent her she felt was too old she wanted a new one. That wasn't a problem.

I did have depression, anxiety, and panic attacks before I went into the hospital. They have severly worsened since I have been home. I am SO ANGRY I feel like this hospital is getting away with this. It has caused me marriage and family problems because I can get mad over the dumbest things now. It just seems silly. I cry almost everday. I have so much guilt for what I have put my family through.

I also forgot to say, after I got home I done a DHE-IV treatment for one week out patient to break my migraine cycle. They gave me DHE-IV, Phenergan & magnesium. ( Not 11 other types of medication along with it). I went through the treatment well without complications. I wish I would have done this in the first place.

Now, I have my medical records and I am TERRIFIED. My doctor here at home is very good and alway's booked up. I can't get in until Friday. My stress level is extremly high right now.

I can't read alot of the handwritting. Here are a few things I can make out.

During my hospital stay - here are some of the nurses notes I can make out that I said at different times. Some I remember saying some I don't.

1) Patient says she feels very weird

2) Patient says she has never been so swollen

3) Patient not doing good ( doing good is underlined) ..calling dr.

Here are some things I DID NOT KNOW, until Monday when I received my medical records ( which was a complete hassle to get).

My MRI was normal exept for sinus ( didn't sound serious.... I think it was just infection)...but, where was my antibiotic...( they wanted to drug me with everything else).

Proximal in Arm ( I am not sure what this means)

Eyes ( PEARL)..this scares me..I can't find anything on the internet what could this mean?

Oriated x 3 ( dont' know what that means).

Abnormal EKG - RSR or QP Pattern in V1, V2 suggest right ventricular conduction delay, Nonspecific T-Wave abnormality ..( I don't know what it all means..but, it really scares me)

GFRD1 - Abnormalities in Creatinine Production as seen with extreme in body size or musclemas, in those with skeleto muscular diseases, may contribute to teh inacurracy of the eGFR . Assessment by Creatinine Clearance is recommened.

Surgical Consult for Peripheral Phlebitis - I NEVER remember any type of sergical consult and I am terrified because this sounds like some type of bloodclot...( from what I am getting from the internet).

I had signed a release form from the doctor that I had my out patient DHE - IV treatments for all my medical records. They sent my MRI and blood test only. My doctor didn't seemed concerned because he recommened this hospital and said if anything bad had happened he was sure they would have sent them. I wish I would have INSISTED now. I was just so sick and trying to concentrate on getting my migraines under control. I was not thinking lawsuit...I was thinking Migraines and working hard to break the cycle.

I called the hospital in Chicago about the Peripheral Phlebitis and all I received was a call back from a lady ..( I think she works in legal, but not sure) and told me if I felt sick to go to the ER they weren't there to explain medical terms to me over the phone. She was EXTREMELY RUDE.

I am fighting a Migraine right now...( I still get them sometimes)...so, I hope this makes some since.

Please what does everyone think....I feel like I have a Medical Malpractice Suit..I think they should have to pay for what they have put me and my family through.

I would be happy to answer any questions.....I APOLOGIZE this is SO LONG. So, much has happened since July and I am a horrible writter.

I forgot to add...

the medication she gave me I had been hospitalized for 5 days last year caused a deep dark whole of depression...I was really in bad shape. The doctor immediatly started tapering the Neurontin and got me off of it fast. I still suffer from depression ( not so bad I need to be hospitalized, but not fun). Why would she put me on this medication again? In her own notes while we were talking she wrote down - Neurtontin - depression.

Also, if all of these problems were happening...Abnormal EKG's etc. ...I can not find anywhere they did ANYTHING except over the phone the dr on call told them to take me off some of the medications. He didn't even come see me.

I also forgot to say over the first two days on several occasions my blood pressure would drop 90 over 70, or 94/70. This happened at least 5 times. I can't find where anything was done in my medical records. I have NEVER had blood pressure problems before. So, I don't know why I had them off and on for 2 days in the hospital.

My MRI was normal exept for sinus ( didn't sound serious.... I think it was just infection)...but, where was my antibiotic...( they wanted to drug me with everything else).

Proximal in Arm ( I am not sure what this means)

proximal: nearer to the center of the trunk of the body

Eyes ( PEARL)..this scares me..I can't find anything on the internet what could this mean?

PEARL: pupils equal and reactive to light. It's a good thing.

Oriated x 3 ( dont' know what that means).

You were oriented to time and place 3 times, (as I explained to you yesterday).

Abnormal EKG - RSR or QP Pattern in V1, V2 suggest right ventricular conduction delay, Nonspecific T-Wave abnormality ..( I don't know what it all means..but, it really scares me)

Take these results with you when you see your Family Physician. We are not looking at this EKG and cannot compare it to any prior EKG's you've had.

GFRD1 - Abnormalities in Creatinine Production as seen with extreme in body size or musclemas, in those with skeleto muscular diseases, may contribute to teh inacurracy of the eGFR . Assessment by Creatinine Clearance is recommened.

This test has to do with your kidney's filtration. They wanted you followed up with another urine test. See your Family Physician for that. Sounds like they're trying to be thorough. It's now your responsibility to follow up.

Surgical Consult for Peripheral Phlebitis - I NEVER remember any type of sergical consult and I am terrified because this sounds like some type of bloodclot...( from what I am getting from the internet).

In your previous post, you stated you had 2+ edema. A Doctor must have come in to assess your edema. He/she may have been your surgical consult to rule out a phlebitis as a cause for your edema. (just speculating)

She was right. They are not there to explain medical terms. She probably didn't know enough to explain it, anyway. Yesterday, YAG posted some very helpful sites. You should try them.

I am fighting a Migraine right now...( I still get them sometimes)...so, I hope this makes some since.

Please what does everyone think....I feel like I have a Medical Malpractice Suit..I think they should have to pay for what they have put me and my family through.

Your obsession and anxiety issues may be a contributing factor of your migraines. See your Family Physician on Friday and follow his/her advice. See a med/mal attorney who will have a consultant go over your medical records and advise further.

Don't start another thread. Keep everything on this one now. Other may be along to offer further advice.

In one of your many earlier posts, I recall that you stated you have been treated for depression in the past. What medication are you taking, currently, for your depression?

Also, if all of these problems were happening...Abnormal EKG's etc. ...I can not find anywhere they did ANYTHING except over the phone the dr on call told them to take me off some of the medications. He didn't even come see me.

Calling in orders is common. If the medication was causing the irregular EKG, it would not be appropriate to wait if the medication needed adjusting. The nursing staff would keep in touch with the Doctor via telephone until he/she could get in to the hospital.

I also forgot to say over the first two days on several occasions my blood pressure would drop 90 over 70, or 94/70. This happened at least 5 times. What is your normal blood pressure? Depending upon what your normal BP is, 90/70 or 94/70 isn't life threatening. Many people, including myself, walk around with normal BP's of 90/60 or lower.

What you really need to do is not try to read into what is stated in the medical records.

Stop obsessing and I'll bet your anxiety level and headache frequency will decrease. ;):)

Oriented x3 means oriented to person, place, and time , not 3 times! You knew who you were, where you were, and what day it was. Sometimes they add purpose to the orientation checks (oriented x4), meaning you know why you're in the hospital or doctor's office.

So at the end of all this, what are the permanent damages you have suffered due to your experience in the hospital?

Actually, I guess it's the way one becomes accustomed to practicing, and the type of patient population one treats. During the course of a psych examination, we've always oriented to person, time & place 3 times. :)

Well I'll certainly defer to you since you've actually DONE the exam :) I was just going by what I was told - x3 refers to oriented to 3 aspects of the situation.

I truly appreciate the help....

Lealea1005...what does OP mean..when you said ignore that poster? I also have finially realized to keep it all on this thread. Sorry it took me so long to figure it out.

Ok...I hope I answer all the questions here. You are correct Yag left me some good links, but when I deleted all my other post I forgot to write down the links. I hope he or she post them again and this time I could save them to favorites.

The nurse at my family doctor did tell me to bring in the parts of my medical records I am concerned about so I do plan on doing that. I also agree the stressing, etc. would help with my stress level and migraines. It is just so hard sometimes.

I am doing everything I can for the follow up. I wish they would have wrote this stuff down on my discharge sheet so I could have followed up sooner.

As far as the lady in the legal department ( as I stated I think that is where she is located), I didn't call her. I called the admitting doctor to find out what the Perphial ( sp) Phlebitis was. The receptionist sent me to a voice mail so I left the dr the message.

Does Phlebitis mean bloodclot? How is the rating with Edema is +2 fairly good, poor? I can't figure out what +2 means. If a doctor did come in there was no way I was in my right mind to sign a consult to sergury. I was too over-medicated.

My Springfield dr thought I would be there 2 to 3 weeks. My admitting dr told my husband and I aproximatly 10 days. This hospital is 11 hours from my home. Why was some of my family not called when I was having problems?...They were calling the hospital and couldn't find out anything. They were listed on my sheets for emergency contact and to give information to.

I still cannot figure out WHY they were giving me all these other medications. I am beginning to think this clinic & hospital ( they have their own floor) is a lab rat operation...in my oppinion. I wasn't there for a trial...I was there for DHE-IV treatments.

I have NEVER had blood pressure problems. Mine always runs around 120/80..and stays very close to that. I ask everytime I go to the dr. My mother tells me I am very lucky to be 43 and have such great blood pressure.

When I checked into the hospital I was ONLY on Celexa 20mg ( once in the morning), Klonopin 3 x per day, Xanax ONLY as needed for severe panic attacks, and Ambien as needed. I hardly ever took the Ambien after I got over my Insomnia. My new Phycyitrist(sp) that I had for the last almost 2 years felt like I was doing so much better he ( I agreed) let me cut down to 20 mg from 40 mg..( tapered of course) of Celexa. I was hardly ever taking Xanax or Ambien because I was truly improving with my anxiety and depression issures. We were discussing to start lowering my dose of Klonopin when my Migraines improved. He felt he wanted my Migraines under control before I started tapering another medication. I wrote on my paperwork and told my admitting dr I wanted to stay with what my home Phycitrist had me on. I trust him VERY much. He was the first one I had ever met that did NOT push, push, & push new medications on me. He is also a great listener to me and we discuss my meds.

Lealea1005...I can't thank you enough for how much you have already relaxed my mind with all your help. PEARL for the eyes scared me...now, after what you said it makes since.

Ecmst - As far as after I got home my long lasting problems for malpractice.

1) I am not sure if you are familiar with anixiety, depression, or panic attacks. I am VERY familiar with it all. In my case at least, they are several different levels of anxiety, depression, etc. When I checked into the hosptial for Migraines - As I stated above I was doing better than I had in years. So, good my goal was to go off all medications. ( My doctor was not sold on it...but, said he would work with me and see how it goes). I explained above how that was going. Since I have been home from mid July....I have taken more xanax and ambien than I had probably taken in the last 12 months put together. My depression is so much worse. I see my phys on Nov 13. I really don't want to go back up on my Celexa...but, I will have to wait and see. I have had MOOD SWINGS like I have never had in my life. I have so much built up Anger...at the clinic and hospital that I just don't know how to handle it. So, many unanswered questions. I know that may sound crazy to you, but the unanswered questions of WHY did this have to happen drives me crazy. My mood swings has caused me alot of problems with my marriage and family.

2) I have NEVER had the cramping in my chest and arms before. The pain when it hits is UNBEARABLE. I explained in my first post about those. Although, the emergency room and my overnight stay at the hospital hasn't figured out exactly what is going on I am hoping my family dr on Friday can. The doctor did put me on 2 Aleve morning and night and Flexeril ( muscle relaxer) at bedtime every night. He told me to follow up with my dr. which I am doing on Friday.

3) I heard something just THIS week that I had never heard of before. It is called MRSA and I hope and pray I do not have this. Please if anyone is familiar with this please help me out and see if this sounds like it. A few days after I got home from Chicago - Just below my neck on my back was what I thought was a pimple. It would puss up and then bleed ( it didn't hurt) more than a normal pimple, but was more discusting of one than I had ever had. It would almost dry up and then puss up again. It left a small scare after it healed. ( I did mess with it alot because it bugged me). So, I think maybe that is why it scared. Well, a few day's later just below my butt on my left leg I thought I got spider bit. It didn't puss ( that I am aware of)...but, still looks like a small whole in my skin with a rash around it. I remember this clearly because I told my husband...I just get home from the hospital and I get spider bit. That is how my luck is going. This hurts a little sometimes, but NEVER bad pain. I just couldn't get it to go away and still haven't. I never even mentioned any of this too my doctors because I have been so focused on getting my Migraines under control and then the chest pains....pimples and spider bites...( that don't look that bad) was the last thing on my mind. Well, this week I heard about MRSA on the news and it sounds like what I may have. So, I really started looking at my body and I have another spot that looks exactly like the one on my leg ( right below my butt) on my lower back. It is NOT painful either. I called my family doctor and they said they would take a look Friday and see if I need to be cultured. I have looked at pictures on the net and stopped because they made me sick...( My heart hurts for these people). My spots don't look like any pictures that I have seen. I also don't have what I would call pain with the spots. In fact, I didn't even know I had one on my lower back until I started looking. The only one that bothers me a little is the one on my leg. PLEASE if anyone knows that this is not MRSA please tell me. I realize you could not possible know without looking or cultures, but a guess anyway. I also have not ran a fever. I did have a knot in my butt from a shot that was HUGE red, swollen and feverish for a few days after I got home. The knot is still there, but is very small now.

Gosh, I feel like I have wrote my life story here and I am normally a very private person.

I truly APPRECIATE all the help!

If anyone feels like I have a medical malpractice case please let me know.

I am still happy to answer any questions...or listen to any suggestions.

Lisa

I know this doesn't matter....

I know this does not concern my malpractice case. I just wanted everyone to know that we are not a sue happy family.

My son and I was in a car accident about 5 years ago. We were driving a fairly new GMC Safari Van ( not a mini van). We were at a stop light and a car came up so fast and hit us so hard that it shoved us up into the car in front of us and it completely totaled our van. My son and I were extremely sore, etc for awhile. The car that totaled our van DID have insurance all we asked for was a replacement vehicle. ( The cops of course put the car behind at fault and we were not at fault for hitting the one in front, because the car shoved us into it). Anyway, we bought another USED vehicle and never asked for anything more.

Phlebitis is an inflammation of a vein and doesn't necessarily mean there is a clot. If there is a clot associated with it, it is called thrombophlebitis. It could be the cause of your edema. Edema is scaled 1 to 4. 2+ edema mean that the indentation left after the Doctor pressed on the area quickly subsides and leaves no obvious distortion of your skin.

A surgical consult just means that a surgeon was called in to assess your condition and the possible need for surgery. You do not sign anything for a consult. I think, perhaps, you're thinking of a consent.

Your blood pressure at the hospital, 97/70, does not equal "blood pressure problems".

Lealea1005...I can't thank you enough for how much you have already relaxed my mind with all your help. PEARL for the eyes scared me...now, after what you said it makes since.

You're welcome.

Ecmst - As far as after I got home my long lasting problems for malpractice.

1) I am not sure if you are familiar with anixiety, depression, or panic attacks. I am VERY familiar with it all. I know that may sound crazy to you, but the unanswered questions of WHY did this have to happen drives me crazy. My mood swings has caused me alot of problems with my marriage and family.

Your Family Physician may want to do blood work to rule out physical issues such as thyroid disorder, hormonal changes, etc.

Anxiety can exacerbate those symptoms.

3) I heard something just THIS week that I had never heard of before. It is called MRSA and I hope and pray I do not have this.

We cannot diagnose. See what your Family Doc. says. He'll be the one actually looking at them.

Gosh, I feel like I have wrote my life story here and I am normally a very private person.

I truly APPRECIATE all the help!

If anyone feels like I have a medical malpractice case please let me know.

I am still happy to answer any questions...or listen to any suggestions.

Lisa

Lisa, you have a Family Doc and a Psychiatrist whom you trust. Listen to what they tell you. Make sure they communicate with eachother regarding your medical care.

To answer your question regarding malpractice, I will again tell you that you will need to have your attorney have your medical records reviewed by an expert who can offer further advice.

PS: OP is original poster...which is you.

Here are the names of the sites - you can google them up at your leisure.

Dorlands (abbreviation lookup)
Tabers (medical dictionary)
PDR (drug lookup)

(And while I am far from a doctor, I highly doubt you have a MRSA infection. Don't get caught up in the media hype.)

I totally agree! Wash your hands....keep a small bottle of hand sanitizer around and use it.....just use common sense.

Thanks for the help

Thanks for the help and the links

I do realize I need to talk to an attorney. I have all my medical records now. I got the last one's yesturday from my home town that I needed. So, Monday I will start the search for a Medical Malpractice Attorney in IL.

I was disappointed with my family doctor for the first time because of having to wait on the MRSA.

As far as the MRSA ( that I pray I don't have)...he thinks it is a Spider bite. Well, from what I have read that's what alot of doctors think MRSA is in the beginning. He told me to put Neosporin on it and he is setting me up with a Dermatologist to make sure of what it is. I wanted to scream...but, didn't. I don't know why he didn't take a swab test or something there.

As far as the Sergury Consult...for the Phlebitis, this is what he said - ( this in my words from memory..not his exact words)...this would have been what they call a floating bloodclot that normally disolves itself. He said they may do surgery up there for this, but here we do not. If it had been a different type that is deep..I think lealea it was the word you used Thrombophlebitis. That then he would be doing test and would probably have to have sergury. He told me I must have had a bad IV...I said yes, I do remember in the hospital one of the IV killed me whenever they pushed anything in that IV. He did ask for a copy of that sheet in my medical records and I gave it too him.

As far as my chest cramps, he says I have inflamation in my chest wall cavity. He wan'ts me to stay on the Aleve and Flexeril and if I have to stay on the Aleve too long they will have to check my liver.

I also think you were right I was thinking consent.

So, basically I have some answer's but not all. I am SO TIRED of doctors right now.

I know I have to find an attorney to see if I have a medical malpractice case, but I would like oppinions if anyone thinks I do or not.
