Unfortunately, I believe that if Columbine would happen again, kids having cell phones wouldn't HELP the situation as much as muddy the waters for the responders.
Helping the situation isn't what matters. The problem with such would be students being frightened. You can't expect a child to not be fearful during such a circumstance, and furthermore, you can't expect to not want to communicate with the one thing that makes them feel safe. It may help the situation by children calming themselves with a parents voice.

To OP... Maybe you should discuss the situation with your daughter. If it's to be kept in the book bag at all times during school hours, then that means it's not meant to be used ^.^. My high school required them to be off, and in lockers. Your daughter is lucky the cell phone wasn't confiscated as a potential dangerous weapon (explosive device). I've seen it happen :(.

In all reality, a detention is a far cry from possession charges =/.

what i dont get and maybe i missed it is.... if daughter was the only student in the study hall and the study hall monitor/teacher gave her permission... how did she get "caught" to get in trouble?

Hmmm...my guess is that Detention Bound Princess got busted when Mom came to get her from school. She had to sign her out, right? Well, how did Mom know DBP was ill and needed to go home for the day if DBP never went to the nurse's office for illness and to call Mom.

Alternatively, Mom DIDN'T sign her out of school, but spilled the beans about the cell phone when the school contacted mom and DBP skipping class.

Just a couple of guesses on my part.....:p

Strange you should mention Columbine....

We have two high schools very near each other hear. One of the students of school "A" hid a handgun in a ceiling panel (and was found to have several other weapons at his home.... thank God it wasn't worse)... but was stopped.

Instantly, that school went into lockdown.... and the text messages and cell phone calls started. Within an hour, the elementary schools, intermediate and junior high schools in the area had also been locked down and news reports had spun WAY out of proportion.

Not just from the students... but also teachers. It got so bad that PARTS of school "B" went into lockdown depending upon whom heard what rumor.

Unfortunately, I believe that if Columbine would happen again, kids having cell phones wouldn't HELP the situation as much as muddy the waters for the responders.
Wait.. are you near East Greenbush?

Whatever the case, my sister texted me during something *exactly* like what you described when someone opened fire in her school. Very scary, but she said afterwards that it gave her some small sense of relief to be in contact with family.

Yes, there is relief.

But I was speaking from an "information to the outside world about conditions inside" point of view.

Rumors run rampant and there is just no limit to their exaggeration and scope.

See, and I wouldn't care about that. I know my kids would contact me and one another, and I would want them to know that they were in my heart and I'd be doing anything possible to get them out. Would they text others, too? Probably. But me and their sib would be at the top of the list. But, in the event of the worst, I would want those last "I love you"s to be out there. For them to know that I was with them.

Your position is precisely the reason my H allows his high school students to bend the no-cell-phones rule. They aren't allowed to text or talk in class, of course. But he won't confiscate them and turn them over to the office, as the rule requires, and as most of the other teachers do.

He wants his students -- and their parents -- to have every option available to them in case of drastic emergency.

Let me try to say this better.

Of course I would want my children to contact me and let me know they were okay.

I just question emergency responders using those same children is, um, suspect.
