What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? Michigan
So last Friday, 4/10/08, at 8:00 am my landlord's grandson that lives downstairs bangs on my door and hands me a piece of mail (how he ended up with my mail I have no idea but i've had problems with not receiving my mail) and then without another word says, "We haven't gotten your rent for two months now, do we need to take legal action??". Might I add he was about as rude and threatening as you can get about it.
This is the first i've heard of this, as I have had money orders made and then mailed them the rent each month. Typically, I give it in person where the landlord owns a barbershop but the last two months it was more convenient to mail them.
I said, "Excuse me? I have had money orders sent to you both months, I will gladly show my receipts... if you're positive that you haven't received them IN THE MAIL, please tell me so." He backed off.
An hour or so later I had just finished my shower when I hear banging again on the door... this time it was his wife, but she was very polite and said that water was leaking thru their dry wall and asked if I could turn the water off. I said sure, no problem.
Another hour later and my landlord shows up... no warning and didn't ask to come in, she kind of just looked at me like she was expecting to be let in. She went to take a look at the bathroom and said that they have had problems with the dry wall leaking before. She got on me about how cluttered my place is and how her daughter cleans her cat's litter box everyday (I will admit it had been a few days but again... I had no warning, it would've been totally cleaned out if I had). We talked and although she was only just civil enough... she obviously made uncalled for comments, then proceeded to complain about my neighbor who smokes like a banshee and thinks his place reaks and then she said to stop by her barbershop to show the receipts.
Saturday morning, I had no water. So I went to the barbershop... unfortunately i'm kind of screwed because I can only find this month's receipts but I thought here they would see that I at least paid this month's and i'd talk to them about last month. Well no one in my landlord's family was there but one of their workers offered to take a picture of my receipts and show it to them, she said she would vouch for me. I told her to tell them that my water was not on in case they weren't aware.
It is now Sunday... and my water is STILL not on.
First of all, I thought it was totally inappropriate that the grandson threatened me - he is NOT my landlord and it was out of line either way... my landlord said that she hasn't tried to contact me about the rent before this so they either just assumed I hadn't paid or something shady is going on and they're trying to just get more money. Second of all, I have had NO written notification for anything... not about the rent or about the water being turned off.
I have to go to work pretty soon here (unfortunately dog groomers/bathers don't get Easter off). But yeah, i'm looking at other places just in case, but it'll be hard to pull off, i'm in training to be a dog groomer so I make $200/wk at most, so while I can get new money orders made for last month, i'll have to figure out a way to catch up on last month's while I post an inquiry for those ones (my rent is $450 and it takes two money orders to add up to that amount). My mom helps me out a bit so that I can finish my training but I hate asking for help for this, I don't see any other way around it though... possibly have help from my last boyfriend who had to move a long distance away and we're trying to make it work. But again, I don't want to borrow money from anyone...
OH and this is currently a month to month lease if that helps at all.
