There is a five-day period of hospitalization during which time the physican wrote and signed a DNR order. A DNR order requires justification.

DNR justification will be found in the medical records, not in the autopsy.

My advice is to review the medical records from the hospitalization and to do so via the OP's personal physician or the OP's husband's personal physician.

Have the records sent to the personal physician of choice. Make an appointment to discuss the events. Go to the appointment and discuss concerns and ask questions.

Personal note to gfro--In a blessed yet twisted way, it does get better.

Lya, could you please clarify this for me?

IF I REQUEST A DNR ORDER, MUST MY DOCTOR HONOR MY WISHES ?

If you don't want CPR and you request a DNR order, your
doctor must follow your wishes or:

- transfer your care to another doctor who will follow your
wishes; or

- begin a process to settle the dispute if you are in a
hospital or nursing home.

If the dispute is not resolved within 72 hours, your doctor
must enter the order or transfer you to the care of another
doctor.

(I may have misunderstood - did your post refer to a particular state or overall?)

Thank you!

My post refers specifically to the date, time, and location of the five-day period in which the OP's husband was hospitalized and during which time the husband agreed to a DNR order.

Thank you for clarifying :)

I must have missed where OP said he signed it during that 5-day period time. My bad!

Regardless of when he signed it, justification will be in the medical records of the five-day period of hospitalization.

Play outside before summer is gone.

He signed it shortly after he arrived by helicopter to the hospital. He did go into cardiac arrest. I was still driving down and didn't find out about it till the day before he died.

update

I don't know if there is any interest in this but I want to tell you about my husband's autopsy. He died a year ago march. I still don't have a final report- have a preliminary but I need a final for his workers comp case and to know what type and if it's hereditary. I got the prelim. last sept. but it's incomplete without knowing what type of amyloidosis he had . At the time I was rather frustrated and upset (as always when talking about this stuff) . The pathologist has been sympathetic when I talk to him, as though he hasn't been the source of my frustration. Since I have been in contact with this guy ,it's always "2 more weeks"or "call me next week -I'll have something for you" to find out he's gone on a month long "mission" and no one else knows anything. So I am at my end when he says he has to send the results to the Mayo Clinic to find out what type. Then he asks me if I have accepted Jesus as my personal savior. I say no. Then he proceeds to tell me about his son who is severely disabled and shouldn't be alive and what a miracle it is. I am shocked by this- Am I to wonder if I had "jesus" my husband could still be alive? I am shocked and all I can say is "science is a wonderful thing". After this his demeanor towards me has changed. Up until this, he had been slow but at least seemed concerned. Now I get any info. second hand and nothing new. He won't talk to me or return calls. Last nov. I called his pager and he returned that call but hung up when he realized it was me. I know this because I hit return call and got his voice mail .Finally I get to speak to him last tues. and I think only because he doesn't know who's on the line. He says he thought he sent that but he can't remember what type of amyloidosis it was that he could tell me on the phone. Then he says he'll do the report this week. Of course I have heard this before. I feel like he's treating me like some heathen not worth his effort. My sister is ready to complain to the board. I am so stressed and I want these answers. It's holding my life up. I don't know if I can do this much longer. I mourn for my husband's death. This feels like slow death.

He wasn't a firefighter in Ca. It happened years ago for a federal agency and there is no presumptive injury law for fed firefighters yet. And even if there was , I still would need the "final" autopsy report.
