Emancipating a pregnant minor

What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? New Jersey

My friend's daughter is 16 and pregnant. She's gone to a shelter and was told that they cannot take her because she is only 16. My friend has been told by DYFS that she can only emancipate her daughter if the daughter receives child support????? This child is 16, has a criminal record for shoplifting and is under house arrest. She is SUPPOSED to be in school and is not going. She has also been leaving the house.

My friend is at her wits end and has spoken of taking her life. I am extremely concerned for her. What rights does SHE have??

ANY advice is most sincerely appreciated. I don't know how else to help her.

She has the right to return to her parents or guardians. If they or you feel she is a danger to herself or others please call 911.

oh, you are MOM's friend.

where is dad? mom is legally required to provide for her daughter until said daughter is 18. her unborn child on the other hand, she is NOT responsible for.

if the child is not following her probation, has mom reported this to the parole officer? turned the child over to the state?

As long as she is the child's parent or guardian, the answer is yes, she has to provide for her child. She can't just choose to stop parenting because things didn't go her way.

Yes, I am sorry I wasn't clear. I am mom's friend. She does not have the resources do do this research.

I understand about the daughter and I recommended calling the parole officer. She did call DYFS but they're asking about her son tool. The son is not an issue. He's actually a wonderful child. Can the state take the son too?

sure can. if the child is not being properly cared for, they may have to intervene. where is the father to the new baby?

She cares for both of her children equally and is a great mom. Her daughter has been nothing but trouble for years now. If they determine that the son is provided for and that the daughter is causing an issue will they only remove her?

I'm sorry but this is so enfuriating. You don't emancipate or give up on a 16-year old CHILD just because they are difficult.

Mom needs to needs to get this child help, medical and mental help. This child isn't failing on her own ~ mom is failing this child as well and she should be ashamed of herself for giving up..

If you knew all the facts you would not be infuriated. This child has been in an out of juvenille detention and mental institutions. At 15 she got pregnant by a 19 year old. She steals and is on probation. She is supposed to be in school/on house arrest and does not comply. This is not a matter of my friend not wanting to be bothered but rather a real, problem child. What rights does a parent have??? Doesn't seem as if she has any.

when you say particularly, would mom talk to him and talk him into taking custody? maybe a change of scenery? mom talking to the probation officer to get a transfer?

Your friend is not using the resources she has properly. What happened when she called her probation officer? What happened when she called her doctor?

She is more worried about what will happen to her when she calls the DCFS instead of how it can help her daughter.
