What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? CA
It's dads weekend. Saturday 10am-Sunday 6pm.
Dad doesn't have a computer.
One of our daughters has a lot of homework that requires one. So much that Sunday night would not provide enough time to finish before Monday morning school.
How do you handle this?
Also, how many of you are not home when ncp picks up or drops off kids?
And why? (I prefer to be home)

well, not sure how a school can require homework to be done if the student does not have access to a computer. Not all students have computers so what do they do?

maybe a local library.

I would suggest somebody purchasing child a laptop so she can take her work with her. I doubt this will be the only time this happens.

This is also last minute to realize it might be a problem and expect a calm resolution.

daughter also had Friday after school and Sat morn until dad picked her up. Maybe a lesson in priorities is in order with the child.

this isn't applicable to me anymore but I would suggest the answer would have to include the age of the child as relevant as well as trusting all parties to do what it expected of them.

Then, depending on how civil the parents are to each other would make a huge difference. The last thing a child needs is a big argument during such a transition. It simply sets in their mind until the next exchange with them dreading that time.

Giving her a computer is nice, but does Dad have internet access (if she needs it)? Or a printer?

I'd get kiddo a laptop, but then, I LOVE laptops and myself and both older kids have them.

However, I have to ask... what kind of homework REQUIRES a computer? Sure, I can see a final product requiring a computer, but not the ENTIRE assignment.

Dad doesn't need a printer, once the assignment is done it can easily be printed out back at moms on sunday night or monday morning.

Or just save the printing until Daughter gets home.
Still curious why homework REQUIRES use of computer for DURATION of assignment(s), and why Friday night/Saturday morning PLUS Sunday evening isn't enough time for kiddo to do what DOES require computer use.

to advocate for mom on this one point.

research! Google is invaluable when writing papers.

and it the work takes longer than Fri eve, Sat morn and Sun eve, the teacher needs to explain, at least if this really was an assignment given Friday and expected on Monday. HHmm, have to wonder if that priority lesson isn't even more appropriate now.

I'm one of those terribly mean mommies who expects quite a bit of research to still be done with books. Of course, I live across the street from the local library, and own a set of Encyclopedias.

BOOKS are invaluable too. ;)

If you can find them.

I grew up with a set of Funk and Wagnall's myself. I have been seeing libraries cutting their hours, drastically in some cases and to be honest, the internet does provide such a huge database of info it is hard to fault using it.

Personally, I enjoy reading from a book more so than on the internet. Being an electrician, I have need for the National Electrical Code. I have it both in print and on my computer. If I am searching for a something and a word match provided what I need, I use the computer but if I really am researching something, I tend to use the print version. It allows for me to flip from section to section while retaining the original section easier. It also allows for easier browsing beyond the immediate area of view for me as well.

and child was not doing assignment friday afternoon through saturday at ten-why?

Dad must have a public library, just as you do. Also I find it hard to believe a school would make computer work mandatory over the weekend, when there is a strong possibility a student will not have easy access to a computer. If a school makes internet research mandatory during non school time-they better be giving my kid a free laptop ;)

If it were me, and dad really did have No way to access (no library-and your computer is a large desktop, and not portable for example) I would be emailing the teacher and explaining that my child is visiting their father out of town, with no computer access.

As to second question, if kids are old enough to be home alone, than sure, why not?
