hello. i really need to know the answer to this question: in georgia, if i move out of my parents house at 17 without their permission, can they file any sort of charges against me(like a runaway) ?
i am graduating this semester(in may) at 16 and in july i will turn 17. i really want to take a break for a year and figure out what i want to do. my parents want me to go to college immediately but i really just want to be on my own for a while. im not trying to rebel or be like **** you or anything like that to my parents. they just dont understand why i dont want exactly what they want for me.
please only respond if you are %100 sure that you are correct. im not trying to b an ass but yeah... i definitely do not want to get arrested. thanks.

I already answered this question and the answer has not changed.

You cannot move out of your parents' house at the age of 17 without their permission. If you do, your parents can have you dragged back home.

I am 100% certain of this answer. I'm sorry it isn't the answer you want, but it is the legally correct answer nonetheless.

It will still be the legally correct answer the next time you ask it, too.

**A: yes they can report you as a runaway and the police can arrest you and throw you in a detention home. You are still considered a child until you reach 18 years of age in your state.

He is a minor. Minors need to listen to their parents. He can be "forced" to go to college at this age.

i'm actually curious as well. would a college counselor actually enroll a child in without their consent. i'm all for following parents rule, but when third parties are involved, and they refuse to participate.....

btw, op. you don't have to "know" what you want to do to be enrolled. you can be enrolled as undeclared. take fun courses. try a language. a phography class. drama. i have a brother that is doing a director course in college. made his own short film and posted it on youtube. really dark stuff. get involved with the school activities. find something that requires an internship, start networking. i also saw some transfer to france and costa rica during the summer programs, look into that.

So if one forces a minor to enroll in college, does the adult have to pay for it? And once the minor turns 18, can't they just drop out? I would never force a 17 yr old to decide. Heck, it's hard to get them to shower on a regular basis.

Loophole in the law.

5.2.3 Runaway Juveniles (17 Years Old and Non-Emancipated)
5.2.3.1 Enter records in the NCIC missing person files within twelve (12) hours of being
reported as runaways by their parents, guardians, or legal custodians (OCGA 35-
1-8). Because Georgia Law does not provide for forcible detention and return of
17 year old Georgia runaways, the record entry must include a note in the
miscellaneous field stating:” Locate Only- Do Not Detain- Contact Agency via
Administrative Terminal Message.”
5.2.3.2 Neither the Georgia Missing Children Information Center nor GCIC has been able
to determine what court(s), if any, have jurisdiction over 17 year old Georgia
runaways.
The problem is you are not allowed to sign any legal documents, such as a lease or even get a job without your parents permission. They can say you took something, and then you are arrested.

Sorry senior posters, there is a similar loophole in the Missouri law also.

Yes, there are a couple of states where a poorly written law makes it difficult to force a 17 year old home.

Difficult is not impossible. If a parent really wants to get their kid home, they can.

Which is why I gave him the minimum age he can be GUARANTEED of not being forced home.
