Sensible or not... I can tell you that when my stepdaughter is ill, the school does call me first, even though my husband is the primary emergency contact. The school secretary has discovered that I am not only closest to the school (5 miles; Dad: 50 miles; Mom: 315 miles) but also most likely to answer the phone. In what scenario does it make sense to call StepMom FIRST?
Just last week, my husband received his first phone call from Kiddo's school in over three years. Kiddo was vomiting and needed to be picked up. Our office manager and I were both in closed door meetings, so the call went straight through to my voice mail. When I didn't phone back within a few minutes, the secretary THEN phoned Dad.
