Parental notification

How in the world can anything be done to a minor when the parents are not notified? Seriously??!! If this is common law in our country things are really screwed up!

I talked to the school and they thought I should just let things go and wait to hear something instead of creating something out of nothing...

Lady! Just call to be sure! Just to hear the clerk on the other end of the phone chomp her gums and say "nah, nothing here". This is your son's possible criminal record!!

This is like getting a call from your neighbor telling you your kid has been in an accident, but since you didn't hear it from an official you'll ignore it. Are you serious??

And, what has our son told you when you asked him about his contact with the police?

Did you ever consider the possibility that if something WAS mailed to you that your son might have intercepted it? If he has somehow managed to get in trouble and keep it from you, it is not a stretch to think he might try to conceal his fact from you.

As others have said, call the court. if you do NOT call the court, and if your son misses his court appearance, the next notice you might receive will be an officer at your door to take your son into custody.

Which would you prefer? Make a phone call for piece of mind, or a nice officer hauling you son off? Seems like a no-brainer to me.

You aren't seriously willing to risk his future just because you do not want to spend 5 minutes on the phone, are you?

Understand that they do not really HAVE to notify you to start a court case. They could also simply arrest him.

While it is unlikely that personal notification would NOT be made, and possible that the neighbor is all wet, a little piece of mind could save you - and your son - a number of sleepless nights jumping at every knock at the door.

My son doesn't have access to our locked mail box. Also he has always been a good kid and he told us everything. We have a good relationship and I trust what he is saying. And how in the hell can they haul my son off if we miss a court date we have no notification for?? What if we were gone out of state and had no idea of anything of this matter?? WTH?!

A country of due process. That means that kids are not exempt from the law just because they're away from their parents at the time they go on their crime spree.

No they should not be exempt from the law. But due process should mean notification to minors parents. If an adult is going to court they would be informed of it.

Then I have to ask - why are you even posting here? You asked what to do, and you got several responses. Most of which involved placing a phone call. You don't want to do that? Fine. Wait to see what happens.

It is entirely possible that your son got something in the mail and hid it from you. It's okay, though. You'll find out if he gets picked up at some point. No worries.

No it is not possible when our mail is locked and I have the key. And what is with all the scare tactics? He has had no history of trouble and is a good kid. I looked up some of our state juvenille laws a little bit ago and I have no worries. Just thought I might get some clear factual legal expertise here not go make a phone call...

No I don't watch that ****. It's all BS...he hasn't been charged with anything how can he be arrested...anyways what you people here are referring to are juvenilles who have done horrible crimes. In his case if it even went to court it'd be rehabilitiative support and community service...from reading some of our juvenille info. Especially so with him never having any sort of background.
