What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? west virginia
Can a family court judge order me to pay half of any state and federal taxes owed for years my husband and I did not file a joint return? I only worked one year throughout the marriage, we filed a joint return in that yr (we owe $650) . All other years he worked and filed alone. he owes almost $50,000 for those yrs.
The IRS only shows that I personally owe them nothing other than the $650 but the divorce judge ordered me to pay half of the $50,000 and called it marital debt. i know the IRS doesnt honor divorce decrees so how can a judge order me to pay money I dont owe?

You answered your own question: because it's marital debt.

The income that he earned during those years was marital income, any assets either of you aquired were marital assets, and any debts were marital debt.

Then there is no way a married person can protect themselves from marital debt? I was under the impression that by not filing jointly, a person was responsible for their own tax iasues whether their married or not. So, since i have talked to the IRS and know they won't try to collect from me since the debt to them is owed by him, what can the remifications be if i dont pay?

The judge by ordering you to pay the money means you owe the money.

We don't help people skirt the law or disobey their court orders.

That is not what i was asking! I dont have $25,000 but i do have two children i am raising, whe my exhusband owes ME $30,000 in child support. I was only trying to find out could i get in legal trouble ( jail, atty fees, etc) if i dont have money to pay the taxes that he owes. Isnt that the point of this forum, to ask a question? Or do u people just sit back and nerate people u dont even know to make yourselves feel important?

Your STATED GOAL is to avoid payment to the government and your X for your marital debt (taxes.)

You may go and hire an attorney to listen to you. Be prepared to pay by the minute.

No it wasnt. What is wrong with u people?? I asked a simple question and got attacked like im some criminal. Probably none of u know anything anyway, which is why u r sitting in front of your computers messing with people for entertainment. I have never had so much as a speeding ticket, who do u think u are to judge a person and assume they are trying to do wrong? I asked "what can the ramifications be if i dont pay" not how can i "get away" with not paying!
