Have you contacted your ex's insurance and asked them about "guesting"? I had this same situation with my husband's HMO insurance in CA and his kids were out of state. The insurance was able to "guest" them into a medical group in their area so they could use his California HMO in another state. Many insurance companies can do this if they do business in that particular state with kids that are away at college and for situations such as these.
Its worth a try and like I said it worked for my step kids who are in another state with no problems.
