How can I get a Publc and City 4yr College to comply with the Disabilities Act?

Accident - Bankruptcy - Criminal Law / DUI - Business - Consumer - Employment - Family - Immigration - Real Estate - Tax - Traffic - Wills   Please click a topic or scroll down for more.

My take on the original post was different than everyone else's. My take was that the OP felt that the school did not have proper accomodations for disabled students...and that he thought it was terrible that blind people HAD to use the stairs to get anywhere. Not that blind people shouldn't be in stairwells, but that they shouldn't HAVE to be in stairwells.
;)
Correct!

Let me start off by saying my complaints don’t really have anything to do with the speed of the elevators. I mean of course I wish they faster and that you didn’t have to ride packed like sheep nor do I wish to ride with the school's freight, but that’s life right? ;) Just like last night I had a beautifully and eloquent written post all ready, but bam! Some kind of glitch occurred. I think it was on my end and not the site’s fault. PS my disability isn't technically temporary and sorry screen names are especially hard to remember and IDK who said what. oops
Anyways I’ve been doing a lot of thinking and I agree that they can’t add anymore elevators because of the cost etc. However, they could do small things like only moving freight, space hoggers , and huge file carts at night, when classes aren’t in session.
However here’s my biggest compliant, drum roll please: Why does it take them sometimes as long as a week to fix an essential elevator? I know the school is under major construction, but that’s no excuse. I also realize that to the best of my knowledge this is not breaking any laws. Am I correct?
Now that’s cleared up, that I’m not that petty to go through the trouble of starting a thread over waiting a little for an elevator, so what’s a college student supposed to do? I’m assuming the worst of course for a person like me who obviously isn’t a people person nor can I get my point across. So, things like formal complaints to everyone you could imagine in the world, petitions, rallies etc. are all that can be done?

Thanks for all the brutally honest :cool:replies

And of course thanks to the person who gave me the pop up window for disabled college students. I don’t know how the web works or if everyone got it , but it was much appreciated. Thumbs up Dude or Dudette

Honestly, do you have any idea what is being fixed concerning the elevator?

Elevators are a specialty. Elevator repairmen, in any state I am aware of, are licensed. That means any Joe Icanfixit cannot repair an elevator. Screwing up an elevator can mean death, seriously. So, first you have to have the breakdown. Then you have to schedule time with the company hired to fix it. In today's economy, many places tend to keep staffing to a minimum so they may not be able to run a guy out there right now unless it is an emergency. Then s/he has to diagnose the problem. If it requires parts to be ordered, they order them. With old equipment, it may be difficult to find parts quickly. Then, once the parts are there, it gets repaired.

Get the idea it may not be an overnight fix? A week is not an especially long time to repair an elevator.

I would suggest having a bit of patience. Maybe this is God's way of teaching you the value of patience. ;)

Just file a request with the school for more time to get around between classes. I don't know why this is even such a big issue. They probably get a few of them every week. It's not a huge undertaking.

{edit}
I live in an old building (1930s). We just spent a week without elevator service because the part that was needed had to be custom made. Delays happen. It's not like the repairmen were sitting in the cab playing Connect-4 for a week.

I suggest you do an internet search with a search string such as:

"americans with disabilities act enforcement"

I suspect it would give you a number of avenues to pursue.

You might also consider contacting the body that supervises the school - but first you might ask someone to help you state exactly what you are complaining about. You might find a teacher who would be wiling to help you. Your complaint is somewhat general and probably should be more specific regarding what is wrong and how that consitiutes a violation. For example - " the ADA states xxx but the school is doing yyy."

"Shame on them" vents your frustration and may gain some sympathy but it probably won't result in much action.

I assume you want action and not just sympathy.

there has been nothing presented that shows any violation of ADA. Did you read something that everybody else missed?

I specifically asked what OP believes how the school was violating the ADA and I got nothing. In fact, I believe the OP has accepted the fact there does not appear to be any actual violations as well.
