What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? Ca.

Yesterday, I had another court date. I have a specialist lawyer that is far from the court house. We had a 10:00 am court time and we get there, and no Judge. Signs on the door say that another judge is handling the cases that day. "That" judge happens to be the wife of the opposing lawyer in my case. So, yesterday will probably cost me approximately $700 to 800 due to at least a 1 hour travel time (each direction) and 45 minutes to reschedual and I used up a sick day from work which I'll get a ding for. What can I do about this? Or is this one of those things that's a "California Divorce"?
Thanks for any suggestions.....

The wheels of justice need grease. Some have more resistance than others. I once battered a school superintendent because he thought he would get the advantage by letting us wait, with a lawyer on the clock. When we all sat down finally and we were relaxed and joking with the schools lawyer, treating him like background, he lost it and started screaming. I sympathize, however console yourself with all the money you will save long term on xmas presents.

What do you want to happen exactly?

Judges get sick. It happens. Life goes on. The court isn't going to compensate you, that's for dang sure.

(I don't suppose anyone bothered calling to see if things were going ahead as planned, did they? Nah. Of course not)

Improve medical science so no one ever gets sick.

Of course, there will be people like you who call in sick because they have to go to court instead of scheduling a day off ahead of time. But you never gave much thought to the people you were inconveniencing at YOUR job.

That's probably a drop in the bucket compared to how much it would have cost you had the judge showed up.

Where I'm employed, an employee can schedule a day off for personal business that cannot be conducted outside normal working hours, and, the hours are taken from the employees accrued sick time. Things aren't always as they appear to be.

I'm a court employee. Our sick time and our personal time is all in one bank. If it's not vacation, it's sick time. That's just the way it is.

Given that OP specifically stated that sick time was taken (as opposed to personal time)... I bet he took sick time, and not a personal day, a vaca day, etc.

Many companies have PTO days (personal time off) instead of seperate sick days and personal days. Those PTO days are all combined and are used for either sick or personal days- whichever the employee needs or chooses to use them for.

Yes, that's true. Many companies do have that kind of policy. I have personally converted two companies to the PTO method, although my current employer uses the standard V/S/P method.

However, the OP did not say he took a PTO day. He said he took a sick day. Therefore, the likelihood is that his company does not roll them all into one. Regardless of what some other companies may do.
