Hello, I have a very sticky situation that has cost my mother a good amount of money. There was a series of "oopsies"(modestly speaking) on both the school and my part, but the high school mistakes were a lot more expensive and could have, should have been avoided. Below will be a detailed account of the events, and I'm simply wondering if there is any legal action that can be taken.
For starters, I am 16 years old and I was attending High School as a precision machining student. Throughout my life I had never really buckled down for school and kind of "half-assed" my way through 6 grade+, so needless to say I wasn't a model student. But the thing is I'm really smart and proficient in "word"-based subjects such as History and English, so I was placed in honors in both subjects about a month into Freshman(2015-2016) year based on Accelerated Reading test scores and recommendations etc. But, the catch 22 was I was kinda going from being a crappy student to having to be the best and I kinda caved under the pressure and started experiencing severe anxiety, and missed A LOT of school. Due to my absences I failed 4 subjects. Students are only allowed 3 subjects and still be promoted. I failed Physical Education, English, Math, and Science(mostly due to absenteeism) but was only informed of Phys Ed, Math, and Science. In order to be promoted to Sophomore year, I was to complete a Math and Science credit recovery course over the summer, and then the following summer(2017) I was to complete a Phys Ed credit recovery course. Come first day of school I had the science completed, but due to money issues I was not able to purchase the Math course(as each course is $250 each). On the first day my mother and I met with the guidance counselor and explained to him what was going on. He told me it was fine as long as it was completed. That day at around 10:00 AM he called my mother and informed her it that I had failed English and it seemed to slip through the cracks. What? How did that happen...? I have a legal document signed by both my guidance counselor and my parents, stating that I only failed Phys Ed, Math, and Science. This is fine though, I will gladly complete them. Generously the guidance counselor gives me until the end of November to complete the course(s)[so I thought]. During the beginning of the school year, I was continually get sick though so I was continually being absent. Doctors excuses were provided for some, but not all absences. I also have extreme trouble with math and was struggling to complete the Math CR course, so the counselor called me in and told me he was going to recommend I return to my "sending school"(Due to the fact that I go to a Technical High School, I do not go to my towns high school. When you leave the school, they refer to it as going to your sending school typically no matter where you end up). So I stopped going. My father, whom I do not live with decided to go to the school and ask if there was anything that could be done to salvage my attendance at the school and they said they would have a meeting. The day of the meeting I came into school and waited outside in the main office for 45 minutes. When I was brought in I was told by the principal that I had failed four classes, and I would not be allowed to stay in 10th grade anyways, and due to my prior absences my request to repeat the year was denied(I didn't request this, my parents did). So basically forget everything you read past the underlined letter, except for the fact that my mother had purchased two $250 classes, for a total of $500 dollars(potentially $750 if we has purchased the English yet) for literally nothing. (Can you feel the wasted time? Me too.) Because I failed four classes anyways, I was not allowed to be in the tenth grade. When it was brought up in the meeting that we didn't know I had failed the classes, the principal went white. I have a lot of questions like: 'How was my schedule generated' , 'How did nobody know until now?' , 'What about my mom's mother?'. But the thing is nobody is returning our phone calls, except an assistant principal who wasn't in the meeting. He assured me he would get me a phone call with someone who could help me that never came. This was two weeks ago. Keep in mind I have documents stating three finals failures, and English is not listed
Now, I do understand that none if this would have happened if I had just done what I was supposed to, but how did NOBODY know that I failed English, and why did the Guidance counselor tell me it was cool that I failed 4 classes? What about my mothers money? Please, ask me any questions you may have and I will answer them to the best of my abilities. Thank you
