Hello, I have a very sticky situation that has cost my mother a good amount of money. There was a series of "oopsies"(modestly speaking) on both the school and my part, but the high school mistakes were a lot more expensive and could have, should have been avoided. Below will be a detailed account of the events, and I'm simply wondering if there is any legal action that can be taken.

For starters, I am 16 years old and I was attending High School as a precision machining student. Throughout my life I had never really buckled down for school and kind of "half-assed" my way through 6 grade+, so needless to say I wasn't a model student. But the thing is I'm really smart and proficient in "word"-based subjects such as History and English, so I was placed in honors in both subjects about a month into Freshman(2015-2016) year based on Accelerated Reading test scores and recommendations etc. But, the catch 22 was I was kinda going from being a crappy student to having to be the best and I kinda caved under the pressure and started experiencing severe anxiety, and missed A LOT of school. Due to my absences I failed 4 subjects. Students are only allowed 3 subjects and still be promoted. I failed Physical Education, English, Math, and Science(mostly due to absenteeism) but was only informed of Phys Ed, Math, and Science. In order to be promoted to Sophomore year, I was to complete a Math and Science credit recovery course over the summer, and then the following summer(2017) I was to complete a Phys Ed credit recovery course. Come first day of school I had the science completed, but due to money issues I was not able to purchase the Math course(as each course is $250 each). On the first day my mother and I met with the guidance counselor and explained to him what was going on. He told me it was fine as long as it was completed. That day at around 10:00 AM he called my mother and informed her it that I had failed English and it seemed to slip through the cracks. What? How did that happen...? I have a legal document signed by both my guidance counselor and my parents, stating that I only failed Phys Ed, Math, and Science. This is fine though, I will gladly complete them. Generously the guidance counselor gives me until the end of November to complete the course(s)[so I thought]. During the beginning of the school year, I was continually get sick though so I was continually being absent. Doctors excuses were provided for some, but not all absences. I also have extreme trouble with math and was struggling to complete the Math CR course, so the counselor called me in and told me he was going to recommend I return to my "sending school"(Due to the fact that I go to a Technical High School, I do not go to my towns high school. When you leave the school, they refer to it as going to your sending school typically no matter where you end up). So I stopped going. My father, whom I do not live with decided to go to the school and ask if there was anything that could be done to salvage my attendance at the school and they said they would have a meeting. The day of the meeting I came into school and waited outside in the main office for 45 minutes. When I was brought in I was told by the principal that I had failed four classes, and I would not be allowed to stay in 10th grade anyways, and due to my prior absences my request to repeat the year was denied(I didn't request this, my parents did). So basically forget everything you read past the underlined letter, except for the fact that my mother had purchased two $250 classes, for a total of $500 dollars(potentially $750 if we has purchased the English yet) for literally nothing. (Can you feel the wasted time? Me too.) Because I failed four classes anyways, I was not allowed to be in the tenth grade. When it was brought up in the meeting that we didn't know I had failed the classes, the principal went white. I have a lot of questions like: 'How was my schedule generated' , 'How did nobody know until now?' , 'What about my mom's mother?'. But the thing is nobody is returning our phone calls, except an assistant principal who wasn't in the meeting. He assured me he would get me a phone call with someone who could help me that never came. This was two weeks ago. Keep in mind I have documents stating three finals failures, and English is not listed

Now, I do understand that none if this would have happened if I had just done what I was supposed to, but how did NOBODY know that I failed English, and why did the Guidance counselor tell me it was cool that I failed 4 classes? What about my mothers money? Please, ask me any questions you may have and I will answer them to the best of my abilities. Thank you :)

Your parents need to be dealing with this. Your mother needs to deal with the money issue herself.

Don't you get report cards from the school?

Yes, I CAN "feel the wasted time." Mine, mostly, reading the load of nonsense you wrote.

I'm very independent, and of legal age. Please do not patronize me. My parents may bend over and grab their ankles but I won't.
The fact that I'm the student in this situation was only to provide background, nothing more. Please do not mistake my age for an incapability of defending myself.

Yes, I did receive a report card, but papers are being misplaced left and right on both sides. I have the first three quarters. I failed. But I restate I have a paper stating my final failures, and English is not one of them. I was ineligible to be in 10th grade and for a solid month I was in the wrong grade, on top of having spent $500 for no reason

Thank you for your feedback:)

No you are not of legal age. You are a minor.

Does your report card show you passed or failed the classes in question? Your tests are not your final grade.

I think you're too focused on my age here.

I don't know how to explain this any clearer.

YES - I FAILED
YES - I WAS LAZY

NO - I DID NOT KNOW I WAS NOT ABLE TO BE IN THE TENTH GRADE.
In order to be promoted to tenth grade I could only fail three classes I failed four. I'm not skipping over that, yes I did, but just because I failed I should have to pay? I was NEVER supposed to attend the credit recovery courses because there's no way my credits could be recovered. If ANYTHING was to happen I was to repeat Freshman year.

$500, potentially $750 is a lot of money. You are completely missing the point here. My mother works too much to pursue this, so I am. If you're not going to answer my question please do not reply.

(At 16 I am of legal age to be emancipated and represent myself. Although I have not this is not relevant)

You do not qualify to be emancipated so whether you are of legal age to emancipate is irrelevant. As you yourself point out. And you are, in fact, wrong about what emancipation permits you to do - emancipation does not make other age-related laws go away.

Do you have a report card that says you PASSED English? Please answer yes or no.

You think that you know what's legally relevant (you don't) and you insist you are of legal age (you aren't.)

But unless you are emancipated you are still a snot nosed kid. Yes, that point is relevant.

Regardless of that, it's your mothers money and she has to deal with it. You have no legal authority to deal with it.

When did your State make 16 a "legal age"?

If you were *my* child, *you* would have paid the $500, not me.

You are not a legal adult. You are not emancipated; Mommy pays your bills. You are a "minor". And if you want to be taken seriously, you take responsibility for being aware of what courses you are failing, and what you have to do to go on to the next grade. What? You thought you were really an A student in English?

You took the remedial courses. No one owes your mother. Well, except you - you owe her a lot. She should be allow you to face the natural consequences of your actions; you have repeatedly betrayed her trust and faith. Clearly you are neither emotionally or academically ready to be a high school sophmore.

You come across as a smart aleck. That is not the equivalent of being intelligent.

Remember: courts are staffed by us adults, not teenagers. If the adults here are saying you're unreasonable, chances are... anyone you face in a legal setting will react similarly.

You all seem to be skrrting around the question.
My age doesnt matter.
Whos money it is doesnt matter
Can my mother pursue this legally
She spent $500(potentially 750) under the impression I would be able to be promoted.

I do not care about your opinion. I do not care what you think of my age or my position. What I do care about is getting my mothers money back. If I was able to provide her evidence this could be legally pursued I'm sure she would be more than willing, but she doesn't have the time to waste. I do. Get off your high horses, isn't this an advice forum?

For the 50th time, yes, I failed. I have adequate documentation I failed. Report card says I failed. But, I have a final failure form, a legal document stating I only failed three subjects, then I guess I failed English. I was unaware of this until this first day of school. I was also unaware of the fact that if I failed four subjects I would not be able to be promoted anyways. The guidance counselor at the school was in full knowledge of this and did not provide me or my parents with this information.

Any rude, condescending, or unhelpful comments will be ignored so please don't waste your time.

Thanks to anyone trying to help, but it seems as if that's nobody :D

I asked you a question, which you have yet to answer. A question that is relevant to your issue.

everyones taking this so personally
I figured on a law forum I'd get unbiased answers but it appears I was wrong lol..
None of you have any idea the situation of my schooling or what I experience.
None of you know me.
You're all answering the question as if, just because I provided a good bit of information you have every single detail? I will repeat none of you know me. This is a forum. I asked a question, and still after 2+ pages of comments have not gotten an answer.
So, if I was to write this as my mother, switch the tenses up a bit, you all would have no problem answering my question? Sounds childish, and every single comment you write is useless.. Have fun wasting your time, LOL.
