Were you homeless? Visibly homeless? I think this may be about that status more than the vehicle type.

No but when travelleling in a car and not utilizing hotels/motels, there is very little observable difference.

They expect you to be transiting through and possibly buying some fuel or otherwise patronizing them, not camping out in their parking lot.

Well, if he’s driving the car he has to buy fuel somewhere. Might as well be st the truck stop

He might even avail himself of the showers available at some truck stops. Yes is cost money. I don’t recall how much

The charge is nominal and they are actually quite nice in some locations. My friends stopped in a truck stop after camping and they had both a shower and a tub and the counter clerk offered them soap and even bubble bath in addition to towels.
