New Jersey. Short story: We have been subject to bullying and toxic environment due to Section 8 tenants in the building. The landlord did not tell us about them before moving in.

It appears he's rather protecting them (easy secure paycheck from the state, understandably), rather than us. We have never missed a payment and have excellent credit score.

Was he obliged to let us know about them before moving it?

No.

ETA: Just in case you were wondering...The LL also doesn't need to let the Section 8 Tenant(s) know that he rents to elitist windbags either. :)

Absolutely not. What's more, if they are difficult people it is NOT because they are on Section 8. It's simply because they are difficult people.

Quite frankly, the landlord is required under the law to protect Section 8 tenants from bullying, harassment and discrimination.

Is there some sort of additional duty imposed on landlords because they are Section 8 tenants?

Yes, there are all kinds of additional rules that a landlord must follow in order to be allowed to accept Section 8 tenants.

The above quoted portion of your post is what needs supporting, LdiJ.

To my knowledge, there is no law that says landlords must protect ANY tenant from bullying or harassment or discrimination by others.

To my knowledge, they Section 8 rules for landlords, not any law, says that they must do so. So, we are both standing here saying "to our knowledge". Feel free to prove me wrong.

That is not the way it works, LdiJ. You know that.

But if it makes you provide a source for your claim, I will rephrase and say that there is NO LAW that says a landlord must protect a Section 8 tenant or ANY tenant from bullying, harassment and discrimination by others.

Please provide a law that says otherwise.

As a Senior Member, you know (or should know) that, if you make a contention about a specific requirement, you may need to back it up with a citation. YOU made the assertion that there is some sort of duty imposed, so you've been asked to support it.

Put another way, I've made NO assertion and I am asking you to give a citation regarding the additional duties you claim are imposed upon a Section 8 landlord.

Actually, I am asking LdiJ to back up her assertion that an additional duty is imposed, whether by law or program requirements.

I can accept that. :)

Any proof at all (not a personal experience) that shows a landlord has by law a duty to protect a Section 8 tenant from the bullying, harassment and discrimination by others would be appreciated.

Honestly...Just take 30 seconds of your time and google the LL requirement.

There is nothing I could find that requires the LL to protect the section 8 tenant from neighboring jerks. Even on the .org site.

ETA: Removed my links as LD should prove her assertion herself.

Additionally: I'm not even claiming that LdiJ is wrong - I'm just asking for a citation, both for my personal knowledge as well as so that others who might happen upon this thread will be assured of the accuracy of the information they are seeing.
