Does a landlord have to tell you he has Section 8 tenants in the building?

New Jersey. Short story: We have been subject to bullying and toxic environment due to Section 8 tenants in the building. The landlord did not tell us about them before moving in.

It appears he's rather protecting them (easy secure paycheck from the state, understandably), rather than us. We have never missed a payment and have excellent credit score.

Was he obliged to let us know about them before moving it?

Absolutely not. What's more, if they are difficult people it is NOT because they are on Section 8. It's simply because they are difficult people.

Yes, there are all kinds of additional rules that a landlord must follow in order to be allowed to accept Section 8 tenants.

That is not the way it works, LdiJ. You know that.

But if it makes you provide a source for your claim, I will rephrase and say that there is NO LAW that says a landlord must protect a Section 8 tenant or ANY tenant from bullying, harassment and discrimination by others.

Please provide a law that says otherwise.

As a Senior Member, you know (or should know) that, if you make a contention about a specific requirement, you may need to back it up with a citation. YOU made the assertion that there is some sort of duty imposed, so you've been asked to support it.

Put another way, I've made NO assertion and I am asking you to give a citation regarding the additional duties you claim are imposed upon a Section 8 landlord.

I can accept that.

Any proof at all (not a personal experience) that shows a landlord has by law a duty to protect a Section 8 tenant from the bullying, harassment and discrimination by others would be appreciated.

Honestly...Just take 30 seconds of your time and google the LL requirement.




There is nothing I could find that requires the LL to protect the section 8 tenant from neighboring jerks. Even on the .org site.
