Landlord harassment

What is the name of your state? Ca, So my landlord where I rent a piece of property from has told the police that I'm squatting here..come find out he actually sublet me the property with owners permission....Now both of them are threatening to have the sheriff department show up throw me off property there been no court dates or notification is this legal I have signed lease and I was behind on rent but just caught him up back in June...I've been here over a year constantly being harassed he even ran over gat bc I closed it

Is what legal?

Nothing you described here is, per se, not legal. If you have a written lease and are current with rent, then you should be safe in terms of an immediate, forcible removal. However, if your lease is month-to-month, your landlord may be able to evict you at any time and without cause.

That said, and while a fully appreciate that "move" is a four-letter word (both literally and figuratively), it might behoove you to find somewhere else to live.

So you were renting month-to-month. Is this typically an owner-occupied property that was leased temporarily while the owners were away?

I am trying to figure out why the owners and landlord used the word “squatting.”

Because they thought if they used word squatters that cops would do something when that didn't work she sent a truck load of guys over saying there coming back in 5 days to demo and haul away all my stuff..but when my dog met them at gate they changed there mind

Have you been paying all your rent on time and in full?

Your LL could have easily terminated your tenancy quickly for non-payment of rent. But since he didn't, and he allowed you to catch up, he cannot use that as a cause for termination now.

However, since you are on a month to month tenancy, he can terminate your tenancy by giving 60 days written notice of termination before being able to evict through the courts.

CA is protective of tenants so please study up on the CA landlord tenant statutes.

You can stay (if you are OK with being hassled) as long as the landlord is getting the process wrong. As soon as the landlord figures out how to terminate your tenancy legally, your days will be numbered. It may be in your best interest to find another place to live as soon as you can.
