     Assets such as life insurance policies, retirement accounts, joint bank accounts, bank accounts with a defined pay on death beneficiary, etc. can pass outside of probate directly to the named beneficiary. They would have nothing to do with you or the estate.

Do a Google search on the name of the county where your uncle was living when he passed away and see if such a system exists for that county.      It's a far better use of your time and resources to leave reviews on Yelp, Google, Facebook, RipOffReport, etc. Otherwise you're just letting this company live rent-free in your head, which hurts you more than them.

     Your mother should also ask the attorney about setting up a "spendthrift" trust versus "a trust" for your disabled brother. You and your mom can investigate the differences between the two so you can decide which fits your brother's needs better.

      Does your custody order say anything about pick up/drop off and who does the travelling? I would ask that since Mom moved away that she be responsible for all driving to/from the exchanges now.

      Let's hope not. While intra-family transfers between a parent and child are legal without going through an FFL, there is still paperwork that has to be filed with the state when it occurs. OP leaving the keys to the gun cabinet with his son would have counted as a transfer...
