If you've watched the news in recent months, they did charge a man who was living out of country for being AWOL / Deserter when they finally caught him after many years.

Remember that you made the conscious choice to sign the papers and the Army is going to note that. The military is not a "regular" job, just because you changed your mind doesn't mean that you can just up and quit. While you believe you have done nothing wrong, in the Army's eyes it oculd be seen quite differently. Just be prepared for that and accept whatever happens. Like everyone has said - turn yourself in now and face the music.

Clare- go back and post your request as an original post so people can easily find it and respond.

also 6 months...any additional or unusual circumstances besides being awol? what exactly was he charged with?

Our "friend" has been AWOL for 3 months so i am always interested to hear about these cases in order to know what he is in for when he is caught, and i know he will be caught.

was anthony arrested or did he surrender?

Ok so heres my update: I went to Ft. Sill and was returned to the unit I left at Ft. Bragg because something went wrong with my paperwork. I am more than likely getting an article 15, OTH discharge, 45 days extra duty, and 45 days 1/2 pay. I'll keep you updated when I get counseled and know for sure.

Well you did the right thing, and it looks like you lucked out all things considered. Are you glad to be past this and moving forward? You realize the OTH discharge will come back to haunt you in the future, but at least you are looking at only 45 days.

thanks so much for updating. I need all the info I can get to see what is in future for our "misled youth"

UPDATE: Ok so I went to legal last week and accepted the article 15. Now Im just waiting to see the commander to get it actually issued. I talked to the Sgt. in charge of my paperwork and he said at first they were planning on throwing me into the 82nd. But I guess after a talk they decided to just discharge me. I wont know for sure until I get the ar15 and start my chapter paperwork...then ill know im getting out. But as far I know the sgt talked the first sgt. into getting me out and I asked him for sure if they are discharging me and he said yes 100% positive. Im pretty sure hes telling the truth. Just wanted to keep you guys posted. Oh yeah, another thing. While I was at legal getting read my rights or whatever, the person leading the class explained that there is a new policy where people who fail drug test are no longer attempted to be rehabilitated they are discharged (probably dishonorable or oth) reguardless. Just thought I would put that out there. Ill post again when new info arrives.

a guy that was in the unit that i was in pissed hot for pot, he got 45 days extra duty, and a half months pay for two months, then got a general discharge. He didnt even get restriction, just extra duty.

Please clarify:

"there is a new policy where people who fail drug test are no longer attempted to be rehabilitated they are discharged (probably dishonorable or oth) reguardless"

do you mean those who return from AWOL and pop hot for drugs OR just those who pop hot without going AWOL?

Thanks for the continued update.

He was just reffering to the people in there that had only failed a drug test. Im pretty sure if you did both the discharge would just be lowered even more and whatever article 15 they give you might have worse punishments. No problem about the updates. Ill post whatever information I think will help people in situations sort of like mine.

Finally Out. Got a general (under honorable conditions). It took from Jan 28 to May 3 to resolve this. If anyone wants information about the process of getting out just pm me. I'll be happy to help. Thanks to all who provided useful advise during all this. Back to being a civilian :D
