What makes you think that an engagement has any formality? In our state at least, two people can walk up, show proof of age and identity and get a license and then march around the building to the magistrate and get married. They will be "engaged" for about two minutes and really if they get cold feet in that time, they're free to call it quits without any further obligation.

People can actually get married - legally - without bachelor or hen parties??? Are you SURE?
