Rmet has it correct.but you still do nott ell us what the COD stated. Please answer the question.
As for the antibiotics, if you are tx someone for a known problem, and the response is not adequate, you move on to the next step of tx. You never said what his clinical presentation was, only that he "thought he had meningitis"
I am truly not going to answer any questions until you give us the info we have asked for....

good luck.
You seem intent on blaming, but have not provided the proof to validate your concerns.

You also state he had a hx of anemia, was he black? sickle cell anemia can cause EXCRUCIATNIG pain, and is actually not reserved to those of the black community. Was this ever explored as well???

If you are an EMT why can't you answer the questions?
What do you think they treat meningitis with?
Please go back through the thread and answer the questions.
You brother died, but you have not even told us the COD, why not?
Did your brother have a spinal injury? Neurological condition?
Yes he had a spinal injury. it was 38 years ago, it happened when he was 8 years old, he was ran over by a plow in a farming accident. He was a paraplegic, he was paralyzed from the waist down.
Yes I'm an E.M.T. and I know that they treat meningitis with strong antibodics but they weren't treating this and that was my main reason for doing this!!!

I guess I'm just looking at this thing from" inside the box" but if the possibility of meningitis is there then why not check when the symptoms are there?
You have not presented the clinical signs of meningitis, other things can cause stiff or sore neck eg, I was hit broadside by a semi in March 1996, I had horrible headaches from the TBI and skull fracture so my doctor did some CS manipulation in September that took care of the headaches but in October 1996 my neck froze up, I didn't have menigitis. I didn't have a fever, did your brother have a fever when he was admitted to the ER?

A CT isn't going to tell you what you want to know, if you had questions, you should have had an Autopsy done. If you answer some of the quesitons you may have some answers. There was a thread the other day it looked like they didn't have a case until they answered one of the questions then it appeared there was a case, so far you don't have a case.

What was your brother's medical condition, remember Christopher Reeves died suddenly, a belief isn't going to make it in court, you have to have some evidence.

Please answer the quesitons.

He was a white male, and paraplegics are known for being anemic, andhe knew this and he knew the symptoms of this. This time it was different and he knew it.

THE COD was listed as respiratory failure as a result of infection. WHAT is meningitis its an infection!!!!
So is urosepsis, pneumonia, cellulitus, osteomelacia, multiorgan system failure, etc... all valid dx that your brother could have had, not just meningitis.
Do you get my point? I am trying to help....
Take your records to a medmal atty. you are TOO close to this case to be objective, especially since you are an EMT.

List all the symptoms, from the chart,

that he had that lead you to believe that he had meningitis.
Let's start there and work our way through this....

You also know it's not the only infection people die from especially those with spinal injuries, is that why you wouldn't answer the questions?

We wern't asking the quesitons to be mean, we were asking the quesitons because they need to be asked.

Your brother had a terrible accident as a child, spinal injuries pose additional risks and health problems. It's far to complex to go into here, but even if he had meningitis, there is no way to prove it or to prove negilgence from what you have related, and if you could, your brother's medical condition is going to mitigate much of the damages if any.

Get out your medical books and research complications of spinal injuries, complications of anemia and hypoxia then cite the formula needed when doing pulse/ox with anemia. Look up, end organ damage, then tell us why it was important to treat the anemia in order for any treatment to help your brother, or how that might lead to respiratory failure? And if he was exposed to anything that bound to hem he would have been worse, perhaps he had an adverse drug reaction to the antibiotic, and the list of possibilities goes on.

That doesn't mean it was meningitis.

Its my understanding that meningitis can only be truly diagnosed by spinal tap. That brings up the question why wasn't that being mentioned when he told them what he thought the problem was and he had the symptoms of it from the time he arrived at the hospital. It was always my understanding that doctors run test not only to verify but also to rule out illnesses

Telling them he thinks he has meningitis is not the same thing as having clinical signs of meningitis. What was his temp when he presented at the ER? Did he have a headache? If so, what ws it like....... You have not given any symptoms of meningitis and no proof that he had it. You don't want a LP if you don't need it.

He did have anemia and it needed to be treated and he was dehydrated, that needed to be treated.
