I know well the original story :) I made up all the names of the names of the queen, the king, prince, now of the evil queen since Disney owns the one they chose, l just don't want to give up the name Snow White (who also is very different from how disney portrayed her: long hair, blue eyes, different style of dressing)
The name "Snow White" is part of the original tale, as would be the black hair and white skin.

But I have seen many variations on this.

Good luck with your book.

Disney scares me
You should also be careful that you don't run afoul of the producers of "Once Upon a Time" TV show. Even if you don't infringe, that show is likely to remain the high water mark for the retelling of fairy tales for a long time to come.

To make a retelling of the Snow White story interesting I think you will need zombies, vampires, or extra-terrestrials, or all three.

That would be a variation on the original - but probably not all that kid-friendly. ;)

With stories for kids, aliens and zombies can be a bit nightmare-inducing. But most folktales are pretty frightening (and gruesome) and any story can frighten a child.

My daughter, for example, developed a fear of foxes after we read "The Gingerbread Man." She was afraid a fox would eat her ... even though we tried to convince her that, because she was not made of gingerbread, a fox would have no interest in her as a meal. :)
