You are not understanding me.

"Is it covered by my insurance" is NOT the same question as, "Is the lab in network?" The first refers to the tests themselves - does the insurance pay for such and such tests to rule out such and such a condition.

"Is the lab in network?" is a completely different question - Are you going to send it to a laboratory that is participating in my network.

You may have asked the first, but you did not ask the second.

I did not misunderstand you. You clearly insinuated I was being irresponsible, and now you are saying asking if it is covered does not imply it will be covered. You may be correct, but your insults are totally uncalled for. As for the people who told me it was covered when it was not, I will pay them the amount my insurance company would have paid them out of my pocket, and they will have to be happy with that. They were eager to tell me it was covered, so they should be happy to get the amount they would have received if it actually were covered.

Right on, you just decide how much you pay them based on what you thought you were told. Decide whether they'll take further action about that. Tell the collections agents how they should be happy about it. Tolerate no disrespect or perceived insult. Good luck with that.

You should prepare for a hit to your credit, and a lawsuit.

You're welcome!

Okay, then. I just do this for a living, but clearly you know best.

Let us know how paying them only what you want to pay works out for you.

Thanks for the good luck. I think offering to pay what they would have received is far better than refusing to pay, and it will still cost me quite a bit more than my $15 copay would have been.. We shall see. It will be resolved far before it gets to any collection agent.

The end result will likely involve you making arrangements to pay the full amount.

Or you'll get it worked out with your insurance company which you probably haven't even talked to yet.

resolved

1) Speaking with the lab, they are quite happy to accept what my insuarnce company would have paid any other lab
2) I am working with the insurance company to add the lab into network. If that does not work out, I will pay as indicated above.
3) Thanks all for your helpful comments.

A variant of the OG Effect, but in insurance.

Yes, it was amazingly easy to negotiate. Clearly there are some that think labs like to put things up for collection--but they don't. It just makes their situation worse. The world is full of reasonable people if you can just get them on the phone.
