I actually have hired an attorney and he is telling me that I could defend myself if I want to spend close to ten thousand for depositions, witness fees, re-tests, etc. Otherwise, he says, I do not have a case. I just want to be able to move the classes up to Indianapolis.
Have you had your first appointment with your probation officer yet? Have you asked your probation officer if you can take the classes in Indy? Your probation officer actually has quite a bit of "say" over these issues and if you approach him/her with the proper penitent attitude you might get quite a bit of help there.

For a first-time non-injury DUI, I doubt that he would be assigned a probation officer even after conviction.

To the OP:
In most states, DUI classes can be transferred out of county (within the same state). You can look up *state-approved* DUI classes for Indiana. Call up the ones close to you and ask them about transferals. They should be knowledgeable about the process and would love to take your $600 or whatever.

Sounds like you have a lawyer already; he should know about inter-county transfers. Ask him.

DUI plea deals are pretty standard within a particular court system. Your case sounds pretty cut-and-dry, and you got the usual.

Don't be too eager to take the jail option. You may spend a week bored to death in a small-town lock-up, or get the stuffing knocked out of you in the county jail with gangbangers.

I'm a probation officer in Indiana, and I see quite a few DUI first-offenders getting placed on probation. There shouldn't be a problem with getting probation transferred to central IN, as well as taking your classes there.

Are they on supervised probation, where they have to physically see a probation officer? Here in CA, almost all 1st-time (and 2nd-timers) DUI's get unsupervised probation of several years, where no court officer checks on them unless they violate the probation terms.

Of course they are on supervised probation. Some of those with a second DUI get put in Drug Court and are in the program for over two years.

How can they be supervised adequately for violations if they are unsupervised?

Because that's how we roll in CA ;)

Whoa. First-time Illegal Consumption or Public Intoxication (no other charges) are placed on *supervised* probation in Indiana?

Indiana must be the richest state in the Union.
We actually might be. Indiana actually has a budget surplus and is refunding a certain amount of money to every taxpayer this year, on top of regular tax refunds.

Huh? They have unsupervised probation in Indiana.

You might want to chat with policemen and lawyers in your courthouse cafeteria.
