one point....this is not a private hospital!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Even if it was, they cannot legally deny you service!!!!!
What does that have to do with anything?

We all agree that a person on government aid who goes to a government hospital and gets medical care can have his tax refund grabbed if he doesn't pay his bill.

7000 for an uncomplicated delivery is pretty normal. You work in a hospital and you don't know this? Besides, how have you not finished paying off the bill after EIGHT YEARS? Even if you paid $10 a month, it would have been paid off by now!
$10 x 12 = $120 $120 x 8 = $960

I think you made a typo ;)

Yes, but the SC Set Off Debt Collection Act clearly goes BEYOND that, in that ANYONE owing money to a non-private hospital in SC, in any of the 81 participating Counties, can and WILL have their tax refunds grabbed to pay the outstanding medical bill.

What I don't get is what part of that program that I gave the link to do you NOT understand ??

Do you need a cite from an SC attorney ?? I can probably get you one, I have a family member who works with numerous law firms in that area of SC and several of those law firms work for GHS on a regular basis.

Zig, OP's portion of the bill after insurance was $800.

Sally, a public hospital can't deny care for an emergency, but it can deny for something planned like maternity care. They could have informed your doctor that you would have to find another hospital to deliver at until/unless your outstanding balance was satisfied. If you had showed up at the door in labor anyway, they might have been required to treat you, but they still could have refused any non emergency prenatal or other care. Still can. Your principals aren't improving your credit either.

its off my credit already and**************I work in the ER ( dont forget) and we have people show up all the time in the ER who owe THOUSANDS of dollare and theie complaints are NOT emergencies by any means and we HAVE to treat them!!!!!!!

Along the same lines

I live in Greenville, work for Greenville County. I was taken to GMH in early 2009 after pedestrian/car accident. My insurance was with the county. All bills related to accident paid by insurance, except GMH. Tried to work with them back in the day but never got any help.

Flash ahead. My SC tax refund (first refund ever) unexpectantly taken for GMH. I'm ok with that, shouldn't have been a refund.

My question is am I vulnerable to any other collection methods, specifically wage garnishment and or bank account freezes?

I am a fan of GMH but don't want to get bogged down in the details. This was a case where their mistake cost me 2 months at St. Francis.

Any help appreciated

One possible solution is to make sure that you end up owing taxes at the end of the year rather than getting a tax refund.

There would be nothing for them to seize if you owed taxes rather than getting a refund.

It all has to do with how many exemptions you claim at your human resources department.

Jeran, please read the thread before responding. Had you read it, you would have discovered this is a thread from 2008 and a poster has already been warned about hijacking and necroposting.
