My thought is that because pitbulls have a reputation as being the dog for bad boys and girls, so people who seem to like having "tough" animals tend to buy them. A great many of their owners also seem to allow them to run free too often, but, that's just my impression.
I don't blame the breed, I blame the owner.
In the case of my shooting, it was not the first time the dogs had gotten out and they had been previously fined. The owners went on a verbal smear attack against the woman who was attacked, and me. Fortunately, their claims fell flat and backfired on them.
