I told him I had a job but had to quit because I had no way to get there. They told me to come back with my tax returns or pay stubs to prove I was/am working. So apparently you advised the court you are working and the court felt that you do not qualify for an appointed attorney ?
What an attorney can do for you is plea bargain for the best possible outcome for you .
If after you take your financial and you do not qualify for a no cost to you appointed attorney ,look for law firms that charge on a sliding scale fee ( meaning a percent of what you earn ) .
You could always ask the DA. I suppose of you're doing it alone , what their best offer is .
