Banned P. - Well that was a terrible misjudgment of what I want. I won't be driving around with my pregnant girlfriend though. I intend to go where I want to go, I saved up for 8 years of my life and bought myself a nice old car. Well now I wasted all that time and won't get to reap the benefits I expected. I don't intend to flip my car, in fact I bought a car that rides respectively low and is really heavy so that I would be even safer.

You will get to keep the car longer following the law of your state. because the state can take it alll away. easy.

..and I'm sure 99% of dead and/or injured drivers weren't intending to flip their cars, either.

Java - So if all I'm doing is heading home after 10, you don't think tat I would be ticketed?
Unless you are doing something that attracts attention, why would the cops give you a second look? Unless you were leaving the scene of a big party, I doubt they are going to be eyeballing cars in the dark to see if the occupant(s) might be under 18.

The kids who do things illegally like drink and smoke after curfew surely won't be stopping.
You're saying they would lead the police on a wild pursuit turning a nothing offense into a serious felony? That has not been my experience, but maybe teens are more hardcore in MI.

I live in the same world as they do, and I know them fairly well. If they're smoking, then this would be one of the least of their worries. It's only restricting the kids who follow the rules, which defeats some of the purpose doesn't it? The kids who won't be able to go out aren't the ones doing illegal things to begin with.
It's also restricting your ability to become a victim of those peers of yours who are idiots.

How fast do you have to be going to flip a 2001 lexus gs300? If I had bought a light, tall car then it would be more realistic to flip. I won't be flipping a low, 4,000 lb, full sized sedan. If I want to put myself in danger I can do it in ways other than that I assure you.

Since I am a MI old person, maybe I'll call up my legislators and see if we can simply raise the legal driving age to something more appropriate, like 18.

If not that, I kind of like the idea of no minors allowed to drive before sunrise or after sunset. Then, maybe we need to have a "minor's speed limit" which is at least 5 mph below the max limit on the road.
My sentiments exactly!

I honestly don't even know what tags are, I just own the car. I even had an extra nice stereo put into it a few weeks ago. Insurance, I have enough saved up and my parents agreed to keep paying half as long as I maintain a 3.5 or above. I make enough money working odd-neighborhood jobs in the summer to do that. I plan on having a real job as soon as I turn 16 anyways.

I agree with you, Music, if I pass the road test, how am I not an adequate driver to be on the road? Isn't that the point?

I'm willing to play my odds against those irresponsible teenagers... I live in a very safe city with very safe roads.
So I thought, and now I have a brain-damaged 19 year-old daughter who will never get to enjoy life.

And no, she wasn't going very fast when her car rolled over several times.

You're invincible teenrights, just make sure you kiss your parents everytime you leave the house and get in your car. I'm thankful that at least I got one last one.

It comes down to maturity and experience. Having a bit more age tends to mean a bit more maturity and less chance for the showing off of "lets see how fast my car can go" or music is too loud and you're texting while driving etc. Just because you can do the technical part of a driving test doesnt mean you'll be mature enough to apply those skills in the real world. Having fewer passengers in the car means fewer injuries and fatalities when an accident happens.

tags = licensing your car with the state = license plates

They aren't that badly priced in Michigan. Who is responsible for the gas that fuels the car? How about regular maintenance? What happens when it needs major repairs?

Antigone, I'm sorry that that happened. I'm not trying to sound insensitive here, but that kind of thing will inevitably happen to some people. I'm deeply sorry it had to be someone you know though.
I chose a car that's a safe choice for a beginning driver. I've done what I can to ensure my safety. It's my responsibility to make sure that I don't endanger other people on the road. If the minimum age for a driver's license wasn't 16 before, then this wouldn't be a problem. It IS.
