If you contacted authorities earlier, they simply could be following up on your report.If I said okay to search emails as I felt nothing I did was wrong. But I hear even being innocent cops can frame you etc if you talk. I've talked with a cop once about a auto incident and charges dropped.
This experience never been through. I used to email people all the time but there was a recent identity theft issue where a man used my email and phone number, and was getting weird calls, emails , etc. I did make a I'd theft report with FTC. But not sure this is the issue here.
If you are afraid YOU are the subject of an investigation, you should exercise your right to remain silent and contact an attorney for assistance.
Again, without your consent, law enforcement cannot seize and/or search your phone or your computer unless they have a warrant specific for that purpose. In other words, if they ask to look through your emails, you can (and probably would be smart to) say "no."
