If you were not married to her at the time the child is born you are a LEGAL STRANGER until you are adjudicated as the father. Your "knowledge" of being the father counts for squat. Mom gets custody. You get nothing. Until you petition to be the father (ask the court for a DNA test, child support order, child custody order), you are nothing more than the man standing on the street corner watching the girls go by. Your THOUGHTS that you are the father don't make you such. Since you didn't marry your girl you are not the legal father. If you want to become the legal father and receive equal footing, get it adjudicated.
