What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? arkansas

found a pair of shoes in the lost and found at school, mother made him take them back to lost and found because, shoes were nasty and maybe some other kid in need may want them. brought back to school to find out they belonged to a high school kid. parents of high school kid wants him to pay for shoes. i offered the original price of shoes but never heard from anyone again, until now. received paper in mail 6 months later stating the theft of property charges, class A misdemeanor. he is an A student, plays in the band and football. never been in trouble. the shoes were never an act of true theft. what are my options to help him? and keep this off his record because this will cause him to never receive any grants or scholarships to college.

child stole shoes. he knew they were not his. he took them anyway. that is true theft. sounds like he is in trouble now.

consult with an attorney, since the item might be considered petty theft, it's possible he could be given a lessor charge or exsponged if he does some sort of rehabilitation.

wow, so this is how we treat our children. attourney said it can all be dropped and taken care of for only $1000.00 bucks. so what happens to the poor who make a mistake. we learn from the mistakes we make but it you have no money your screwed. these poor kids will have to take the charge and no money for college so, go work at mcdonalds. can't these parents make sure the child is punished in a way that doesnt take away their future??????????? oh, thats right, no one cares**************.

Nope... it is how we treat thieves. People that take things that they KNOW don't belong to them.

However, your reaction of "we should let it all go" is disturbing. So, what if your son's laptop was lost and "borrowed" by another student? Would it all be in fun?

attourney said it can all be dropped and taken care of for only $1000.00 bucks. so what happens to the poor who make a mistake.
first, this isn't a mistake. Mistakes are when you trip over your own feet.

The poor ask for a court appointed attorney.

we learn from the mistakes we make but it you have no money your screwed. these poor kids will have to take the charge and no money for college so, go work at mcdonalds. can't these parents make sure the child is punished in a way that doesnt take away their future??????????? oh, thats right, no one cares**************.
Sorry, the law doesn't have a lot of "poor sweet baby" clauses in it.

So, what WAS the punishment you gave to your son when you found he had stolen someone else's property?

So you want the poor kids who make mistakes to be treated just like the poor kids who don't make mistakes?

Or should the lesson be that there are no consequences to one's actions?

Cry me a river. This kid stole what did not belong to him. If he has to suffer some in order to make valid restitution then so be it. This is called being held accountable.

ok, take ur blinders off. first off, if no one claims something in the lost and found at the end of the year, anyone is allowed to take whats left home. second, im talking about kids here not adults. the poor get a screwed up free attorney who doesnt give a crap. fact: because i saw a free attorney first and they were going to do no more than hold your hand while being sentenced. third, i never asked you to solve the puzzle, just to answer what can be done to save his future without paying an attorney 1000 bucks to do it. the free one, which we all pay, doesnt do a thing for these kids. but of course there is always those in this world who wants to just say srew them all. i know your parents are soooo proud of that.

Maybe the free attorney and the $1,000 attorney will get you the same result.

You are really doing your kid a disservice by ignoring that FACT that he STOLE.

I think it is YOU who needs to remove the blinders.

Okay, so let's look at this another way.

What is your son's defense? In other words, when the judge asks him "did you steal the shoes", what will he say that will make the judge think he did NOT steal the shoes?

Realize that JV judges hear "he is a really good boy" and "he just made a mistake" in every case from petty theft to mass murder. You are going to have to do better than that.

ok, i can see that you are no help, just drama. i said stick to the facts. i want legal help, not gossip and opinions. oh so u can feel better about yourself. he got his a-- beat, grounded for two months, everything he owns taken away. and i sold most of his stuff to pay for his mess up. my child has no idea im tring to help him. but these facts are non of your concern. only the FACTS are being stated here. but for some reason you are soooooo stuck on alllllllll kids that get in trouble are a total loss of cause. get a life and dont have kids. this is for adults who are wanting to help someone, not hurt them.

You got legal help. The fact that you wanted a poor sweet baby answer and got legal facts, does not make those facts wrong.

So, are you actually admitting to child abuse on a national forum?

Sidestepping the so-called "a** beating" for a moment, it seems OP is at least admitting that the child is in fact guilty of theft. After all, grounding him for two months, taking away most of his possessions and selling them would seem a disproportionate response if his behaviors "were never an act of true theft" to begin with.

Frankly, though, this is where OP lost me:
found a pair of shoes in the lost and found at school, mother made him take them back to lost and found because, shoes were nasty and maybe some other kid in need may want them.
This begs the question of what would have happened if the shoes had not been deemed so nasty that they were fit only for a more disadvantaged child...

Talk about drama.

Court is binary. Guilty or innocent. You want to prove innocence. What is the basis for that innocence?

Are you going to say that he didn't take them? That he didn't know they didn't belong to him? That he didn't realize he had them?

What is the basis of innocence?

You know he stole.

found a pair of shoes in the lost and found at school, mother made him take them back to lost and found because, shoes were nasty and maybe some other kid in need may want them. brought back to school to find out they belonged to a high school kid. parents of high school kid wants him to pay for shoes. i offered the original price of shoes but never heard from anyone again, until now. received paper in mail 6 months later stating the theft of property charges, class A misdemeanor. he is an A student, plays in the band and football. never been in trouble. the shoes were never an act of true theft. what are my options to help him? and keep this off his record because this will cause him to never receive any grants or scholarships to college.
The legal system agrees he stole.

he is an A student, plays in the band and football. never been in trouble. the shoes were never an act of true theft. what are my options to help him? and keep this off his record because this will cause him to never receive any grants or scholarships to college.
You think there's a gray area in thievery? You're not as worried about him having good values as you are about him getting financial aid for college.

wow, so this is how we treat our children.
Yep, they get punished for breaking the law.

attourney said it can all be dropped and taken care of for only $1000.00 bucks.
It will be good for Junior to have a job to pay what HE owes.

===>This is a preamble to what Junior will be going through in court. They won't be as nice as the people on this board.
