What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? Nevada. I have recently checked my attendence. And I have 80+ absences from being involved with the wrong crowd, but I am no longer doing these things. I have ditched a lot and did a lot of wrong doing. I'm a freshman in high school. Will I be able to graduate? If not, what can I do to do so?

If you want to graduate at the same time as your classmates, taking summer school classes is often an option available.

When you asked your guidance counselor this, what did s/he say?
I have been too scared to go up to the councilor because I have recently had depression, so any time I fill out a form, she calls my mom. I would prefer to get this handled without my mom knowing as much as I can. I know she will find out eventually but my grandparents can take care of it. My family also does have much money so summer school isn't a good option for me. It's about 100 dollars per class, per credit.

Are there any other options? My family can't really afford summer school as of now as it is 100 dollars per credit. And I am missing 2 and a half credits. I am a good student and I learn well, however, school isn't a thing for me. I was part of a bad crowd doing bad things, which I terribly regret. But I usually get good grades. A in english, A in algebra, A in biology, C in dance, but an F in my electives, photography and Spanish. Will have I to take a summer course in photography if it was an elective? Even if I did really well on exams, tests, and finals?

Seriously Kiara, these are questions you should be asking your counselor and the school itself. And honestly, your parents need to know.

You are doing remarkably well in most of your classes for having missed so much school time.

Your school counselor is who you will need to talk to about credits and how to make up what you need in order to graduate on time. Your counselor should also be able to discuss with you financing options for summer classes if your family cannot afford the cost.

I am surprised that the school has not already been in touch with your parents about your numerous absences. It is the parents' responsibility to see that their children are attending school.

Edit to add: I just saw your additional post. Are you an exchange student? If so, you might not be allowed to continue in school here in the US.

You're saying that you parents/grandparents haven't gotten report cards for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd quarter? The report cards list how many absences you have.

Your district might not offer the courses that you took as electives in summer school. School districts try to make sure that at least core courses (those required for everyone) are offered, the rest is subject to budget and demand.

I had a sibling who would look at the 3rd quarter report card (always failing something), look at the summer school courses offered, and focus on getting at least a passing grade average in those courses not offered at summer school. So, miraculously that 4th quarter grade in Physics would be an A or B after Ds all year, even if it meant flunking Math or English.

Furthermore, your *family* shouldn't be financing summer school - you should. Get a part time job and pay for summer school yourself - take responsibility for your actions. Baby sit, mow lawns, whatever.

I also won't be able to take summer courses because I'm not in country. I go back home to my original country.
Is that because you are here on a visitor's visa, or is this a vacation?

I guess you'll just have to repeat the courses at another time - maybe next year. You might not be promoted to the next grade until you do so.

In any case, yours is not a legal question.

I'm guessing Kiara means she's out of the country for the summer.

But I agree - the counselor is the one who can help. At the end of the day, Kiara, if you cannot meet the graduation requirements of your school by the end of 12th grade, you will not graduate on time. Perhaps it would be possible to forego the trip home next summer and use part of the money saved for summer classes? Also, speak to yiur counselor about online options. My youngest did that to make up a required course that she'd failed. They are often more expensive, but available year-round and can be done anywhere w/internet access.

MAny a local school wants to keep its graduation statistics looking as good as they can...and many a HS schedule allows for taking an extra credit or two rather than study halls ..and some allow for retesting of a failed course...probably more latitude than meets the eye ...and a local school counselor, even if overworked as many are., may be happy to implement a success story .....reach out.....and try for a win win....

That could be, stealth2. Clarification might be nice. :)

HRZ, I could be wrong but I think "study halls" are a thing of the past (outside perhaps for special needs students - and then I think they are designed for assisted learning).

I agree about the study hall, Quincy. And, given OP is taking 6 classes, I doubt there is one in there anyway. Also, most states require a foreign language. So while Spanish may be an "elective" I terms of the student getting to choose the language, not taking one is not an option.

IF OP is carrying 6 full courses that may well be a full load by local schedules.

The official names may change but at least locally in a big s.ystem there are " study halls " in there .....we don't have OPs local schedules ..

MOre important...OP is trying to get things back i on track...and YES some educators and counselors do really care....and it may help for OP to seek help within the system ...the upsides seem far greater than the downside...somebody probabaly already knows about his massive ditches

PS I sort of agree with OP as to forms pushers ...find some help that does not immediately fill out a form and call home....that's not help ...Try the teacher in the class you ditched / flunked ...if you are serious about reconstruction of that credit/course . Seems to me you have but a small number of holes to address .

Around me there are summer tuition waiver options for children in need of same ....perhaps in your system as well..?

If you read her posts, you will see the courses she is taking. Count them.

Also, if you read her posts, you will see that she states that she cannot take summer classes as she is out of the country.

Reading is fundamental.
