Sorry, but that undermines your point and supports mine. Contrary to what you evidently believe, HR Managers are not stupid. If he used his own name to "report" you, and then his name came up as a candidate, HR would be able to figure that out and it would discredit HIM, not you. And if he "reported" you anonymously, there is NO way they'd do anything but disregard his report.

You’re right. I think I missed that post. Sorry.

I personally don’t believe that anything your roommate would say to a recruiter would make a difference in a hiring decision. The background information you yourself provided would be checked anyway, once it got to the point where you were being seriously considered for a position.

I recommend you change roommates as quickly as you can and start a search for a different job.

I will suggest that you go over your resume/applications carefully to make sure you are not embellishing your qualifications.

Is HR trained to ignore an anonymous tip? I would think they would take it into consideration, this is not something you see everyday. Also, will they reach back out to you regarding the lie someone made on your application?

HR is well aware that anonymous tips come from people who have axes to grind and take them with entire shakers of salt. They do not and will not take anonymous tips into consideration. You are free to think otherwise if you insist, but you'll still be wrong.

Anonymous tips are not given a lot of weight in hiring decisions. Tips can be investigated but, unless there is good reason to suspect a top candidate for a position is lying about their credentials, most employers will rely on their own fact-checking and not on what some anonymous person might say.

It’s true that sometimes liars manage to make it past employer scrutiny and will be hired for a position they are unqualified to hold. Once the lies are discovered (which they generally will be), the employee can be fired (unless, perhaps, they are an elected official ... ;)).

If you are sure your application can pass careful scrutiny (e.g., you weren’t creative with your job history or educational background), your roommate is unlikely to be the reason you are not chosen for a job.

Do you always look to project blame on others rather than accept responsibility for yourself? The fact that you suspect your roommate on such feeble evidence indicates to me that you would be the same with co-workers if hired. Employers (especially me) don’t want trouble makers creating endless unnecessary conflicts for them to resolve. Also the fact that you suspect your roommate of being underhanded when competing for the same job indicates to me that you would do the same thing yourself. You are obsessed with proving at any length that your roommate is a scoundrel and torpedoed your job chances.

If you let these characteristics show during a job interview, good luck!
