I think the OP is right, is not rude, and his landlord is seeking an unearned extra month of rent for at best being complacent about when his tenancies are due for renewal and at worst an intentional act to extract money from departing tenants rather than ensure continuous occupancy.
Get that in writting.
Ask them if they will ACH or wire the money to another bank or financial institution.
At worst they will escheat the money to the state they are registered in and you will have to file a unclaimed property action (easy enough) though that could take a very long time.
Ask in writing for a written explanation for why and how the account was closed and why they will not give you your money and also reequest a check in writing. Do so by certified mail.

If you have 10 grand of gains and a 6 figure earned income, you should consult a tax professional. Especially if you have no idea how it works and have not filed and paid gains tax before. It is not crazy complex, but it is much more involved than a basic return.
