Okay, to clarify, I have not been served. It seems like a lawyer would have at least called my phone and left a voicemail if they were serving me. That's what leads me to think it's a collection agency from a bad credit card. They sent me a letter when I wrote them a letter stating my early leave of the last month (10 days, I left on the 1st of the month, the lease expired on the 10th, so I let them keep my security deposit). So let's say those 10 days equated to 400 dollars, I let them keep the 750.00 dollars because I was already paying rent on my new place and they wouldn't just let me leave. They have been terrible landlords over the past two years, harassing, verbal abuse, etc. They claim a few things like small holes in walls from pictures, re-painting (this is standard after 2 years of living somewhere). They would harass me about paying on the 1st of the month without the states 5 day grace period, so if I paid on the 3rd they would harass me. I know they do their own repairs, so they wouldn't have receipts of the costs. They literally just want my money if this is them trying to sue me. They are trying to turn a profit.

There is no requirement to do that, and there's not even a logical reason to do it.
They are trying to turn a profit.
Darn those businessmen...always trying to actually make a living...how dare they!

Wow thanks for the advice. Apparently you don't understand the situation Mr. Non-Attorney.
It seems to me that Zig understands the situation perfectly...so don't get snippy because your ridiculous comment was called out for what it was...silly.

With all the people/companies after you for money...you would benefit from a sit-down with an attorney.

What *I* understand is that you are not even sure what this is all about. Therefore, unless and until you find out who's after you for money and why, it's rather useless for anyone to speculate on what is the best course of action.

Mature adults leave forwarding addresses when they move. (By the way, that includes the DMV, or whatever it's called where you are.)

That's not how it works. Like the Spanish Inquisition, a process server's chief weapon is surprise. And fear. Wait, a process server's chief weapons are surprise and fear, fear and surprise, and...:)

Ditto that.

Ok I see my faults. The county serving me was not the county I was residing in. I did get my mail forwarded. I do believe the landlords to be insane so I did not give them an address. They did call my landlords for reference and were hostile right off the bat so my new, much more professional landlords did not tell them where I was. I currently reside in the same county that I did at my prior residence, the one that was served was that of my parents house. Sorry for the confusion.

It doesn't matter what county is serving you. The fact that you failed to provide a forwarding address only hurts you.

Well, I don't want them knowing where I live? That's why I didn't provide it. They are freaking psychopaths.

And that's a really good reason to get a P.O. Box.

However, it looks like that ship has sailed. At this point, it behooves you to not hide from the process server and find out what this is about.

1. Calling me racist for no reason (they are african american, I am not) I have never said anything remotely racist
2. My mother was at the apartment and the landlord, a large man, got in her face because she called out him for harassing me
3. Whenever I paid a pro-rated rent check due to the water heater being out for a week they demanding I come down to the mailbox (where I put the check) and give them cash and that I was a "chicken shit that needed to live in section 8 housing"
4. they always demanded rent on the 1st of the month when the lease stated I had until the 5th. They threatened to sue me multiple times, said they had never lost a court battle on a tenant, etc.
5. Wouldn't let me try and repair ANYTHING, so if a door stopper on the cheaply built wall fell off, I had to deal with that lecturing and have him come over constantly, interrupting my way of life. I work from home so it was a constant hassle with him being in there for hours on end fixing random thing or doing things.

I don't know if that's "psycho", but they are pissed off people in general and very hard to work with.

1. Annoying...but not really a biggie.
2. She got in his face and he got in her face. Tit-for-tat. Mom should let her grown child deal with his own issues.
3. Do you know if you have the right to pro-rate rent? Did you google what you can LEGALLY do in such a situation?
4. Please post the section of your lease regarding rental payments.
5. Can't say as I blame him...If I were a LL I wouldn't want my tenants messing with my property either.
